Turn and Face the Strange

The Redeemers by Ace Atkins

May 21, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

I’ve more or less binged Ace Atkins’ Quinn Colson series while in quarantine. These books are perfect for the middlebrow crime lover: good dialogue, believable characters, textured but not complicated plot, and either a refreshing take or at least not a boring rehash of genre tropes. When suggested to me over the years, I assumed these would be Walking Tall ripoffs but they’re not. Atkins is a quality writer and he creates characters with real depth. Perhaps most crucially: he lets his male characters have complicated emotions. […]

Remembrances of Days Past

The Forsaken by Ace Atkins

May 6, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

I’ve discovered the pattern in Ace Atkins’ Quinn Colson series, this being book four: person from the past comes back to Tibbehah County, a lot of staring and some incidents happen and then it all leads up to a big bang. If these books weren’t so well-written, I’d probably be done with them but Ace Atkins keeps finding ways to make his world an interesting and readable one. It helps that Quinn Colson, while being a tough guy Army Ranger sheriff, is also allowed to […]

Storms A Comin’

The Broken Places by Ace Atkins

April 25, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

For a long time, I was wary of starting Ace Atkins’ Quinn Colson series. I’m not from the south but my dad is and I used to vacation there a lot. I know how often southern folk are caricaturized. I also know how people will write off the south’s racist legacy in favor of being “complex” (looking at you Gregory Iles, although I’ve never made it past 20 pages of a Penn Cage book so maybe he gets better). I assumed Quinn Colson, ex-Army Ranger, […]

Guns, Guns, Guns

The Lost Ones by Ace Atkins

April 2, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

We all knew a That Guy from our younger years. The guy who isn’t necessarily a bad guy but always seems to get caught doing bad things. The guy who never has any luck. The guy who can’t catch a break. Ace Atkins does a great job bringing a That Guy to life in Quinn Colson’s nemesis Donnie, while also revealing a little more of Colson’s back story to see how he nearly became That Guy. The contrast here worked well. I thought Donnie was […]

Turning on a Dirt Road

The Ranger by Ace Atkins

March 2, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

It’s a good thing The Ranger was my first Ace Atkins novel. He’s written plenty of southern-friend country crime tales and with this one, I find a writer who has developed a style that works. I was weary of these books in the same way I’m reflexively weary of most male lone-wolf time crime tales: they often produce the same cocktail of toxic masculinity, gross misogyny, class and race caricaturization and a big bang shootout to end it all. The Ranger has a big bang shootout to end […]
