Riveting Account of a famous battle

Northern Armageddon: The Battle of the Plains of Abraham and the Making of the American Revolution by D. Peter MacLeod

March 7, 2019 by Chris Leave a Comment

This is an excellent book about the Battle of the Plains of Abraham – the battle that basically won Quebec for the British. Macleod’s descriptions of the Battle, in particular the Scots fighting, are particularly good. There’s this one old Scot who must have been descended from the Spartans because he keeps going and going while bits of him get blown off. He is also even handed. His treatment of both Montcalm and Wolfe does not lionize either men.   Montcalm does not come across […]

Everything is Worth it, After All

August 25, 2018 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

Louise Penny has been taking me on quite the rollercoaster with these last few books, but How the Light Gets In feels like my favorite part of the ride: the end. I know there are still several books left in the Inspector Gamache series but I think it may be awhile until I come back to them, because this one made me feel completely satisfied with everyone’s trajectory. How the Light Gets In tells two stories: Inspector Gamache is solving the murder of an elderly […]

A Step Back

August 12, 2018 by Ellesfena 2 Comments

Whoo, this book was a struggle. There have been other books in the Gamache series that I didn’t particularly love, but I barely finished this one. It felt like a chore. A Beautiful Mystery has Inspector Gamache and his right-hand man, Inspector Beauvoir, investigating a murder of a monk at an extremely secluded monastery. I know I complained about a previous book in the series having too much going on (the one where he’s investigating the murder of an archaeologist), but this one had the […]

Oops

I forgot to review this book when I read it last month, so here’s hoping I can remember it well enough to write a review. It’s #6 in the Inspector Gamache series, a mystery series set in Quebec that I cannot recommend highly enough for those of you who like mysteries–but unfortunately Bury Your Dead was not my favorite entry in the series. Inspector Gamache is on holiday in Quebec City to recover from a case that ended badly. He’s staying with a friend, but […]

We need to talk about Peter

June 6, 2017 by Ellesfena 6 Comments

Half Cannonball, and a third of the way through the Inspector Gamache books! Like all the other Inspector Gamache books, this one is great. If you’re not familiar, these books take place in Quebec (mostly in a small town called Three Pines, but this one takes place at a remote hotel not too far away), and star Inspector Armand Gamache, a homicide detective and one of the best people in literature. By “best” I don’t mean best written (although he is pretty well written), but […]
