Right book, right time.

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb

April 17, 2020 by narfna 2 Comments

Right book, right time. I sat down with Maybe You Should Talk to Someone first thing Saturday morning, and late Sunday morning I finished it. I really didn’t mean to finish it so fast, but I would put it down for a break and then my fingers would reach for it on their own, and I just kept reading. This book is half memoir, recalling Gottlieb’s time in therapy following a painful and unexpected breakup, and half non-fiction, recounting several of Gottlieb’s own therapy patients […]

The Gift of The Gifts of Imperfection

The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown

April 10, 2020 by randirock 3 Comments

“Understanding the difference between healthy striving and perfectionism is critical to laying down the shield and picking up your life. Research shows that perfectionism hampers success. In fact, it’s often the path to depression, anxiety, addiction, and life paralysis.” This is one of those books I wish I had as a young girl. Perhaps I wouldn’t have picked up on all of the intricacies and layers then that are understandable only with development and years of self-discovery; however, this may have helped to lay a […]

Mystery as Lightweight Snack

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

February 16, 2020 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

I’ve been having some trouble making it through another book for CBR. I started a collection of Ngaio Marsh mysteries, but half-way through the stories dropped off in interest and quality. I then made it about a third of the way through The Best Mystery Stories of 2018, but I didn’t seem to like any of the selected authors. Grumpy, and falling behind in my reading, I seized on The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. Skimming through some reviews it seemed to be a quick, […]

Clinically proven? Maybe not just for me

The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness by Mark Williams

January 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not sure how to review The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness by Mark Williams along with John Teasdale, Zindel V. Segal and Jon Kabat-Zinn. I probably should back up and start with, I have not finished this book and I am assuming I might not finish it. I could not get past the fact that the introduction section is long. As well as repetitive and even a bit condescending at times. Had I started this book at the beginning […]

Helping Others Leads to Success

Give and Take by Adam Grant

August 26, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I hope you don’t get too sick of me posting reviews of books I had to complete for my course. I really did enjoy this one a lot. It had a lot of interesting facts and data/examples to show why helping others leads to win/win. It’s hard out there if you are a manager and you have employees or bosses that are set to win and they want to make sure that you lose. Heck, I have to deal with agency officials at times that […]

Unf*ck Your Habitat: You're Better Than Your Mess by Rachel Hoffman

May 15, 2019 by Ale 2 Comments

Several lovely people on this site have reviewed “Unf*ck Your Habitat” with rave reviews, and I’m totally a sucker for a fun title and I hate cleaning, so I decided to give this book a go. And it’s every bit as good as everyone says. Hoffman breaks cleaning down into short bursts of what she refers to as 20/10s or 20 minutes of doing something and 10 minutes of rest. That way something is always getting done, but it never feels overwhelming. It starts to […]
