https://killingmykindle.com/2018/07/17/episode-1-26-horseshoes-and-hand-grenades/ Wherein I review: 98. Desperation Road by Michael Farris Smith 99. Caraval (Caraval #1) by Stephanie Garber 100. Night Fall (Secret Histories #12) by Simon R. Green 101. Legendary (Caraval #2) by Stephanie Garber 102. White River Burning (Dave Gurney #6) by John Verdon 103. Stay Close by Harlan Coben Some more glorious Southern/Midwest Gothic. A new fantasy series happens when an author eats a whole lot of Legend and Labyrinth and Goblin Codpieces. Dave Gurney solves racism with a thousand red herrings. Secrets, […]
Episode 1-25: The More Things Change, The More Things Stay the Same
https://killingmykindle.com/2018/07/03/episode-1-25-the-more-things-change-the-more-they-stay-the-same/ Wherein I review: 94. Underground Airlines by Ben H. Winters 95. Moonbreaker (Secret Histories #11) by Simon R. Green 96. Vanishing Games (Jack White #2) by Roger Hobbs 97. Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill Another white guy writes about the black experience, and I guess I’m becoming okay with it, because they’re doing a damn good job of it. Simon Green starts to bring the Droods into a crash landing in the Nightside. Roger Hobbs keeps his Ghostman going strong. And Jenny Offill […]
Episode 1-24: Two People Can Keep a Secret if One of Them is Dead
https://killingmykindle.com/2018/06/27/episode-1-24-two-people-can-keep-a-secret-if-one-of-them-is-dead/ Wherein I review: 91. The Stranger by Harlan Coben 92. Brief Cases by Jim Butcher 93. Ghostman (Jack White #1) by Roger Hobbs What would you do to keep a secret? Harlan Coben suggests you would embark on a decades long coverup that involves the murder of your childhood friends. Roger Hobbs believes in going full ghost on the heisting. And Jim Butcher…returns from the grave!!!!
“Surely ghosts will follow wherever there is bad record keeping”
One of the ways books find their way to me is via podcast. I listen to a few pop culture and history podcasts and usually the lovely hosts have book recommendations. This particular one comes via Dave Gonzales of Storm of Spoilers and Fighting in the War Room. His description of the book both sold me and really is a fantastic encapsulation of what the book does; “GHOSTLAND … tracks other American ‘hauntings’ and reveals how those stories are the product of racism and sexism a good 80% of the time” […]
Episode 1-23: Sometimes Your Words Just Hypnotize Me
https://killingmykindle.com/2018/06/18/episode-1-23-sometimes-your-words-just-hypnotize-me/ Wherein I review: 88. Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis 89. Don’t Let Go by Harlan Coben 90. Wolf Lake (Dave Gurney #5) by John Verdon I read a university literary romp where I hate every character, then I travel to New Jersey for a decades long murder mystery involving an old Nike Missile base, and then we go on the worst vacation since Ed Helms’ mistake with Dave Gurney that involves hypnotism and completely abandoning your previous character development for the sake of plot.
Episode 1-22: Lenny Dykstra is My Spirit Animal
https://killingmykindle.com/2018/06/11/episode-1-22-lenny-dykstra-is-my-spirit-animal/ Wherein I review: 85. The Summer of Dead Toys by Antonio Hill 86. I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt 87. Peter Pan Must Die (Dave Gurney #4) by John Verdon One procedural goes a bit telenovela (or maybe I’m just racist)(probably). One diminutive contract assassin kills someone with a Ferris wheel. And we finally find out who killed Jimmy Hoffa. It was Eli Manning. That motherless whore.
