Don’t say what the heck at me as if what I said is so absurd, Seth. Yesterday you told me vampires exist. I watched your face grow fifty extra bones and a thousand more teeth.

How to Help a Hungry Werewolf by Charlotte Stein

December 17, 2024 by Emmalita 3 Comments

Charlotte Stein’s How to Help a Hungry Werewolf is one of the horniest books I have ever read. It is incredibly innocent and filthy at the same time. I laughed and I blushed. I also felt like this book was written just for me, which has made it very difficult to review. Cassie Camberwell doesn’t know she’s a witch until she inherits her grandmother’s house, meets her ex-best friend again, finds a notebook with recipes and brews up a potion. And it turns out that […]

Twisted Shadows by Allie Therin

December 10, 2024 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Twisted Shadows is the second book in Allie Therin’s Sugar & Vice paranormal/urban fantasy series. You must read Liar City to have a clue what is happening. I had to reread it as a refresher. In Allie Therin’s alternate universe, some people are born with supernatural empathic powers. Empaths are feared, fetishized, and regulated. Empaths can read emotions, and if corrupted, can turn people into thralls. A corrupted empath no longer cares about hurting people. The US government has an operative called The Dead Man who […]

He wanted to roll over and invite her to pet his belly, but he was in human form and it was a little too soon to be asking for that.

Fangs So Bright & Deadly by Piper J. Drake

September 7, 2024 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

In the first of Piper J. Drake’s Mythwoven series, Wings once Cursed & Bound, Marie, a witch, is helped by two nine-tailed foxes while she is a part of a team rescuing Peeraphan. We know them only as Fox Number One and Fox Number Two, but that very short scene also reveals that they work with a morally grey organization called Babel, they took part in Peeraphan’s kidnapping and then regretted it when they learned the purpose, and they are very, very impressed with Marie. It […]

Iris had wanted to be independent, but instead, she’d assembled a team.

The Only Purple House in Town by Ann Aguirre

June 26, 2023 by Emmalita 3 Comments

By chapter 2 this book I had never read before was a comfort read. I’m not even surprised by that. Ann Aguirre writes books that are fun and kind. Her books are fluffy cinnamon rolls, even when she is delving into emotionally difficult topics. The Only Purple House in Town exists in the Fix-It Witches universe. Iris Collins is a disappointment to (most of) her family of psychic vampires. When we first meet Iris, she feels like a failure because her abilities have never manifested […]

Those brown eyes full of silver moonlight focused and her gaze found his as he took her into a dance for two instead of one.

Wings Once Cursed and Bound by Piper J Drake

April 4, 2023 by Emmalita 4 Comments

I liked this a lot. Wings Once Cursed and Bound is an intriguing start to a paranormal romance series. It is getting marketed as “for fans of Sarah J Maas and Jennifer Armentrout,” which I think is setting up assumptions about the book that won’t hold up. It is a fantasy romance, but it’s set in an alternate universe Seattle, not a fantasy world. Peeraphan, called Punch by her friends, is at a dance rehearsal when she is offered a gorgeous pair of red shoes. She is […]

The Demon Inside Me by Chace Verity

March 22, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I adore Chace Verity’s queer demon romances. Their human characters are working class and their sensibilities are solidly anti-bootstraps. Colby works at a low end big box store where, as he says, dreams go to die. Colby makes enough to pay rent and occasionally have a night out with the guys he has been friends with since junior high. He’s in the group chat, but their lives have diverged from his – they make more money and have office jobs that get more respect. Colby […]
