Just a cog in the Prison Industrial Complex

Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman

November 6, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Piper Kerman’s memoir was adapted by Netflix as one of its first original content tv shows, with the show arguably overshadowing the book itself. That’s a real shame, as while the show is a great showcase for some diverse female actresses, it lacks the nuance and social issues highlighted by the book. The book chronicles Kerman’s year in a New England prison in the early aughts, roughly 10 years after she committed a drug trafficking offense that led her there. She tells the memoir largely […]

A Better Piper

September 29, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

I’m assuming everyone has watched the Netflix series by now.  Because if you haven’t, then I don’t understand what you are doing with your life.  Do you not like being happy?  Do you not liking having nice things? The show and the book are very different.  But, if you were shying away from picking up the book because Nexflix Piper is a tool, Book Piper is much, much better (as is Book Larry, not that that is much of a feat).  But there’s also more of […]

Learning About Prison the Best Way–Vicariously

February 15, 2015 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I watched only a bit of Orange is the New Black on television before I lost interest. I couldn’t connect with the main character, and I found the storyline a little troubling. I couldn’t understand why we needed a rich, white woman to tell us about prison, and the humor of it hit me the wrong way. But the show continued to grow in popularity, and I continued hearing about it. And then I noticed the book, Orange is the New Black (2010) by Piper […]

I read this book a while back when I was going through withdrawals after binge watching season two of the show the book is based on. Initially when I found out that the series was based on a book I didn’t want to read it right away so as not to spoil the series, but in this case the need was too strong (and there is enough differentiation to not really spoil much).   In case you are living under a rock, Orange is the […]

Piper Kerman threw her pie for you

June 21, 2014 by bonnie Leave a Comment

Like any red-blooded TV watcher with good taste, I am a huge fan of the Netflix show Orange is the New Black. I mean, what’s not to like? I waited a long time to read the book, because I knew as a memoir it would lack the spicy salaciousness of the show. I am glad I jumped in, however. Piper Kerman does an excellent job of describing her personal experience as a woman incarcerated for white-collar crime, and she explains the kinds of sentencing injustices […]

How to make cheesecake with a microwave and laughing cow cheese

April 6, 2014 by genericwhitegirl Leave a Comment

If you live under a rock, Orange is the New Black is the memoir of a Smith College grad who spent her post-college days experimenting with lesbianism and drug trafficking. Okay, to be fair, she might have been more grounded in the former than the latter, but it’s not really clear from the book. Watch the Netfiix series, though, and you’ll get waaaaaaay more lesbionic love scenes than the source material proffers. But that’s not to say you should skip the book! OITNB (get with […]
