“Congrats baby, soon you’ll be in good hands…”

March 12, 2016 by NTE Leave a Comment

For those of you who only know me through Cannonball Reads (as opposed to my blog, or Twitter or Tumblr or wherever), you may not know that the Sister Who Lives In My House* and her husband recently had a baby.  An adorable, Auntie-melting, bundle of joy.  Who also cries a lot and decided not to eat all that much for his first weeks on earth, thereby scaring the crap out of his first time, already anxious and definitely not prepared for this, no matter […]

International Princesses Day

March 8, 2016 by ChainedVase 4 Comments

In honour of International Women’s Day, here is a deeply feminist childrens’ book. Elizabeth is a beautiful princess who lives in a castle and is going to marry a handsome Prince called Ronald. Unfortunately, a dragon destroys her castle and makes off with Ronald, leaving Elizabeth no choice but to put on an old paper bag she finds and follow the trail of destruction to rescue Ronald. Spoiler Alert: She succeeds. She outwits the dragon and rescues Ronald. Ronald is not properly grateful and […]

Author/Illustrators are kind of cheating, taking all that talent up, don’t you think?

January 30, 2016 by NTE 1 Comment

NetGalley introduced me to the work of Ashley Spires this week, and, if you haven’t read any of her picture books, you’re going to be thanking them as much as I am.  Spires is both author and illustrator of The Most Magnificent Thing and Over-Scheduled Andrew, as well as many other books.  The illustrations are simple – mostly penciled backgrounds, with the colorful characters and all the action in the foreground – but also really expressive. The young inventor in  The Most Magnificent Thing, for […]

Goodbye Ziggy Stardust…

January 12, 2016 by ChainedVase 9 Comments

It’s another picture book, you guys, so buckle up. I have Opinions. Some of you may be familiar with Melanie Watt from her Scaredy Squirrel series, although I don’t know how popular she is outside of Canada. Scaredy Squirrel is a good series for kids who are a little hesitant about new things. Childhood is scary. That series is fine but has never caught my interest particularly. This book however! This book is gorgeous. The illustrations are beautiful and detailed with a uniquely 60s aesthetic. […]

Do You Need Picture Books – Stupid Question: Of Course You Do

December 14, 2015 by NTE Leave a Comment

Buying books for presents is just one of the perks of being an unrepentant bookworm: In addition to my own to-be-read excel worksheets, I keep track of things I’ve read/want to read that I know the people on my gift lists would love, and it all comes in might handy this time of year.  If you’re wondering about somethings to buy, here’s a couple of my most recent books as gift purchases.  This review is specifically for kids books, mostly picture books, but I’ve got […]

Kid Stuff (Reviews #1-3)

November 29, 2014 by TheScruffyRube Leave a Comment

I’m never sure if anyone reads my reviews here or not, but I figure, just in case someone does, I’m sorry that I’ve been so long without posting this year (something about teaching in 2014 sucked up all my energies) I thought I’d kick off with some of my first books from the year–a collection of picture books that ended up in a lot of conversations around the Caldecott Medal–my full break down and ballot can be read at my personal blog. With that, here […]
