Did I go off on a little bit of a tangent? Yes. But was I wrong…?

Kindness Makes Us Stronger by Sophie Beer

When I think about the kids we’re raising, as a whole right now, I’m so goddamn hopeful for the future that I can’t even really express it, for fear of losing my “unaffected internet witch” cool points (Note: I do not actually have any of those points). But it’s true: I have been a part of raising the children in my life for 25-ish years now, and – as the aunt of two adult niblings, a couple of teenage ones, and a handful of under […]

Sometimes it feels like people try too hard

Snack, Snooze, Skedaddle by Laura Purdie Salas, Claudine Gevry

To Catch an Elephant by Vanessa Westgate

July 21, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Snack, Snooze, Skedaddle Laura Purdie Salas, Claudine Gevry The illustrations are really nice and bright!  The rhyming lines flow easily and work well with being read aloud.  It focuses on the three ways animals deal with winter – migrating, hibernating, and tolerating.  There are examples provided for each one, including some not usually covered in books about winter!  The end of the book has information in greater detail about the topics and animals covered, and there is a glossary for terms that may not be […]

The results of raiding the library where I now work

Bedtime is Canceled by Cece Meng

Help! We Need a Title! by Hervé Tullet

March 26, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

I work in the Youth Services department of a library now, so I can totally take out picture books for “work” and no one thinks twice about it!  It’s actually my job now! So I’ve been going through my TBR list for picture books and seeing what they’re all about. I probably won’t actually use either of these for work, not because they aren’t good, but because aren’t suited for my ages for storytime.    Bedtime is Canceled By Cece Meng, Illustrated by Aurélie Neyret […]

I really identified with the poor bunny crying those words at the beginning of this story.

Perspective matters.

January 24, 2017 by ChainedVase 3 Comments

I read and review a LOT of picture books. Clearly I have many opinions on this topic. I can’t even blame my current lifestyle of Squishie Wrangler- I’ve always collected picture books, the only difference is now I have to share them. Books are precious and magic. They need to be amazing and special to inspire a child’s imagination. I have 3 criteria for a picture book: 1) beautiful illustrations 2) lyrical language 3) powerful message. I think the illustrations can be as complex or […]

Old Childhood Favorite

January 16, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

Father Fox’s Pennyrhymes is an old picture book, first published in 1971, and one we had in our house when my sisters and I were growing up. I have very fond memories of it and got it for Christmas this year. I was a little worried that it wouldn’t hold up, as it’s been over 40 years since the first publication, but I think that it does. What I remember most fondly about it, the amazing and intricate illustrations are still just as beautiful to an […]
