I was drawn to this because of the cover. We have a little demon dude and some very disgruntled chickens. This little demon friend only has two limbs, and they appear to be sometimes legs and sometimes arms. Wait, they mention toes, so I guess they’re legs. We have some fun little hamster and bunny and butterfly friends by the text, so that’s fun. They’re just chillin’ out. He also talks to himself, kind of like Gollum in Lord of the Rings. It’s a bit […]
The picture book banned for the most ridiculous reason
I chose this for my “Fahrenheit 451” book purely because of why it was banned. It was not banned for content like most books. No, the Texas Board of Education banned the colorful storybook due to lack of research. There’s another Bill Martin, you see, without the Jr., who wrote a book geared toward adults titled Ethical Marxism: The Categorical Imperative of Liberation. Someone on the board decided that Ethical Marxism may not be the best book to be molding young Texan minds, and so […]
I was sad that I didn’t like this more.
I was disappointed in this. I thought I would like more of it, and perhaps I would if I were more caught up on my nursery rhymes. I recognized some of them, and a few were quite clever, but there were some I couldn’t place. After reading another Halloween book that was more to my taste, this felt a little lacking. We start off in a festive mood with “Boys and Girls, Come Trick-or-Treat,” which is based on “Boys and Girls, Come Out to Play”. […]
Thanks, CBR10 Bingo, for getting me to read a book I normally wouldn’t!
So the book I was going to read for this square is a bit longer than I was expecting, and perhaps more dense, so I “cheated” from my original plan and looked for a children’s book that would work! As we’re in October, I looked for a Halloween book, because why not? So I came across Skeleton for Dinner by Margery Cuyler, purely because the author happens to live in my state. So let’s see how it is! I quite like the artwork. The witches […]
Hello Lighthouse
Caldecott-winner Sophie Blackall has created a picture book that takes us back in time to when lighthouses had to have a lighthouse keeper and before things were automatic. This was not an easy task, as it was dangerous and at times, even lonely. In Hello Lighthouse, she explains the daily life of a lighthouse keeper. The ups and downs he (and sometimes she) would have to face. The dangers of ice on the windows and keeping the light always wound. The dangers of fog so […]
The review in which I weep and fulfill all your baby shower shopping needs
My baby and I cleaned off his bookshelf this weekend. My baby is nearly 8, and his interest in the picture books that I spent hours upon hours reading to him and his big sister has waned in favor of a growing number of graphic novels and chapter books. He needed more room on his shelf. My heart broke a little (read: a lot) when he handed me You Are My I Love You and said that it was time to pack it away. It’s […]
