Science fiction + philosophy = a curiously French novel

The Anomaly by Hervé Le Tellier

July 9, 2023 by KimMiE" 5 Comments

CBR15 BINGO – Take Flight, because a flight from Paris to New York figures critically in the plot of the novel On March 10, an Air France flight leaves Paris for JFK Airport in New York City. Among the 200+ passengers and crew aboard flight 006 are a young attorney, a closeted Nigerian pop star, a hitman leading a double life, a French novelist, a young film editor and her much older romantic partner, and a seven-year-old girl. The plane encounters turbulence so fierce that […]

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Sri Swami Satchidananda

April 5, 2023 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This book is on the suggested reading list of Yoga With Adriene’s Adriene Mischler. It’s the fourth book on the list that I’ve read. While this book is called The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, it does not include all of Patanjali’s yoga sutras. Instead, it contains select sutras, as well as commentary on most of the select sutras. Sri Swami Satchidananda provides the translation and commentary. Sutra literally means “thread”, but here its used more to mean yoga aphorisms.  And yoga here is not hatha […]

When You End Up Skimming The Second Half of the Book … Maybe It’s Not For You

Why Marx Was Right by Terry Eagleton

February 19, 2023 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People who are already VERY familiar with Marx’s work and are looking for an outside opinion on how to defend different aspects of it. In a nutshell: Author Eagleton looks at what he believes are common arguments uses against Marxism and refutes them. Worth quoting: “Only through others can we come into our own.” Why I chose it: I thought it would be an interesting and easier to read way to learn more about Marx’s thoughts and writing. (Spoiler alert: it wasn’t, at […]

CBR15Passport, author unknown to me. Zen for Kids: 50+ Mindful Activities and Stories to Shine Loving-Kindness in the World by Laura Burges and  Melissa Iwai  is a story of mindfulness and Zen actives that can grow with your child. Each story is adapted from a classic fairy tale, legend or from stories of Buddha, plus other inspirations. Items you will need to enact some of the practices presented are mentioned, journal activities as well as a haiku at the end of each story (created by […]

Serious and light Philosophy

The Holy Ghost: A Spirited Comic by John Hendrix

January 9, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have started and included in reviews that I am not a religious person. I respect people’s different faiths, but I have never been one to believe in a God or even Gods (though plural gods do make more sense than a single god or goddess to me). I would like to think I am spiritual though and try to be a good person (the book mentions this, more on that later), and I do enjoy the experiences of different books. And when I first […]

How We Can Live: Principles of Black Lives Matter by Lalena Garcia

December 23, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am going to let the publisher description talk for the book How We Can Live: Principles of Black Lives Matter by Lalena Garcia. The first children’s book to feature material from the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, this beautiful picture book will engage hearts and minds as it introduces children to the guiding principles of the Black Lives Matter movement. There are prompts for you and your child or students to talk about. There are concepts that might be new, and some familiar. […]
