Introducing: Miguel O’Hara

Spider-Man 2099, issue #1 by Peter David

February 22, 2022 by fauxschizzle 1 Comment

Peter Parker wasn’t my first Spider-Man. He’s one of my favorite characters, don’t get me wrong, but Peter Parker’s origin story was collective knowledge, it wasn’t new. It was picked over turkey with all the baggage of a holiday meal. I knew going in that 2099 would be different, but I didn’t know what that meant at the time. I was twelve, eating lots of Brooklyn pizza, and guzzling Arizona iced tea at a rate surely to put me on the diabetes fast-track (thankfully, it […]

Baby’s first tie-in Star Trek novel.

Imzadi by Peter David

October 27, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

This was supposedly a huge bestseller back in the day (1992). I gotta say, I don’t really get it. I think I missed the boat here. A while back I went looking for people’s favorite Star Trek novels and then found some of them in my local used bookstores. This was one of the three I ended up picking up, and as my first Star Trek tie-in novel, I could probably have done better. Or, maybe I’m just missing the cultural context. It’s thirty-years old […]

The Fall of the House of Deschain

Dark Tower: The Fall of Gilead by Robin Furth

February 8, 2019 by Classic 4 Comments

Not too much to say here. We get to see Gilead before it’s fall. Constant Readers know about some of the events if you have read the other Dark Tower books. We have Roland reeling from killing his mother and Cort on his deathbed. Oh Roland. He is really a tragic figure. I know that King took inspiration from the Tales of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table when writing the Dark Tower. You just see more similarities in the comics than […]

The Macaroni and Cheese of Fantasy Books

March 8, 2017 by janetfaust 2 Comments

Peter David writes my very favorite Star Trek books. I discovered his work at some point in the ’90’s when I was still interested in attempting to read all the Star Trek novels related to The Next Generation. The lack of quality of most of the TNG ties-ins made it quite an effort, and then Peter David comes along. I don’t remember exactly which novel of his I read first, but I remember Imzadi being the point at which I decided to go from buying […]
