“You’re like somebody waiting very patiently and one day – you’ll do something.”

Deep Water by Patricia Highsmith

October 13, 2021 by blauracke Leave a Comment

In a small town in New England during the 1950s, Melinda and Victor Van Allen’s marriage has become increasingly strained due to Melinda’s infidelities that she aggressively flaunts in front of all their friends and neighbours. Although Victor does appear to be indifferent to it on the surface, he is not as stoic as he pretends to be and starts a rumour that he has killed one of her former lovers. It’s quite fascinating how Highsmith presents the characters in this book. Vic is the […]

Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell

CBR Bingo: People Spoiler warning! This is book 3 in a trilogy, which wraps up a number of very important threads left dangling after the previous book. So after the brief plot summary, there WILL be spoilers in the review. If you are new to the wonderful world of Simon Snow (and Baz, and Penny and Agatha), the place to start is Carry On. This book starts pretty much immediately after our fearsome foursome (and Shepard)’s return from America to England. Simon, still in emotional […]

Hey y’all- long time, no read! I took some time off from reviewing while on vacation, then let vacation mind take over all of my non-work mind and found myself in a reviewing hole. Then, work swallowed me whole. I started writing this on August 9th. Just finishing it now on the 29th-Cait Also, I haven’t been reading reviews here either, so be prepared for a wave of comments coming your way! Good news: I truly enjoyed all seven of these books. One was a […]

Canyon of Dreams: The Magic and Music of Laurel Canyon by Harvey Kubernik

July 19, 2021 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

It is obvious from the get-go that Harvey Kubernik, a veteran music journalist who hails from Laurel Canyon, loves his subject. The problem is that love, and the love of his version of the Canyon, may have artificially narrowed his view of his subject. This is no small book, while its dimensions don’t quite fit the definition of ‘coffee-table book,’ it is a large and difficult book to hold that is chockfull of photos which make it a good choice to casually peruse at a […]

Our Animal Neighbors: Compassion for Every Furry, Slimy, Prickly Creature on Earth by Matthieu Ricard

January 19, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I thought Our Animal Neighbors: Compassion for Every Furry, Slimy, Prickly Creature on Earth would be an environmental book because of the cover. Instead, Matthieu Ricard, Jason Gruhl and Becca Hall created something a little unexpected, but honestly, not surprising. This book is very pro vegetarian. (Sidebar: it is funny I find this book now as a Facebook friend has been a vegetarian for years and recently started posting more pro memes, comments, and articles). It talks of the community of Earth. How people and […]
