Hail To the President

Brave Volodymyr: The Story of Volodymyr Zelensky and the Fight for Ukraine by Linda Elovitz Marshall

September 27, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

After reading the chapter book about ghosts, I found a book about Volodymyr Zelensky. I figured you cannot get farther apart in subjects, so it was the perfect next read.  Now, I will say that while I enjoyed Brave Volodymyr: The Story of Volodymyr Zelensky and the Fight for Ukraine, it is slanted. The start of this picture book was telling us in the most poetic manner how beautiful the Ukrainian flag is. How magnificent. How proud the people of Ukraine are of it. Now, […]

The night parade is about to begin . . .

Tokyo Night Parade by J. P. Takahashi

August 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not really sure how I feel about the picture book, Tokyo Night Parade. After read I noticed there were several layers and the art needed its own reading. Taken on the surface, it is a sweet story about a young girl who wants to spend time with old friends from Japan, ones she has not seen since moving to New York. These friends are a bit different though, as they are the demons of Japanese folklore. And our young hero cannot see them […]

A boy and his bird

Kozo the Sparrow by Allen Say

August 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Kozo the Sparrow by Allen Say is what you expect from a Say picture book. Due in mid-October 2023 I read via an online reader copy. The story is about his childhood, there are the children of post-war, and there his classical upbringing with the more modern touches of the time. There is nothing new, but as always, Say does not disappoint. The story of nursing a young bird to health, the responsibility and the fondness he has for this bird is wonderfully presented. You […]

Heather Alexander shows us that we can craft our own kazoo in the Kazoo Museum in Eden, New York. We find out the state fossil, the […]

Plant a tree

The City Tree by Shira Boss

April 4, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You ever see a tree in the city? Well as a girl who grew up around trees, had a swing tied to a tree, and got her cowboy boot stuck between two limbs once (don’t ask) I never thought much of it. That is until I went to the city and saw them. That looks odd and really out of place I thought. I mean what good is a tree in the city? Little did I know that the city needs trees, and The City […]

Put a little farm in your life

Food for the Future: Sustainable Farms Around the World by Mia Wenjen

January 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport Different genres (non-fiction/Sustainable agriculture for children)There is nothing like not being in the mood to read or to read the book you have in front of you. It colors your feelings about the book, to say the least, but it also makes an overall unsatisfying experience. I always feel like I have missed something when this happens. And I had a moment like that with Food for the Future: Sustainable Farms Around the World. I read it online as an Edelweiss reader copy. That […]
