Some Actually Recommended Romances

Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer

The Next Best Fling by Gabriella Gamez

Enemies With Benefits by Roxie Noir

Dear Grumpy Boss by Julia Wolf

Bananapants by Penny Reid

I’m still reading romance novels on my kindle, and when people ask me what I recommend, it’s always Paul Murray or Ted Chiang or “Oh, I’ve just reread Siri Hustvedt’s What I Loved.”  I have got to stop being ashamed of reading them, though, because some of the most fun I’ve had this year has been reading romances. This is by no means a comprehensive list of the top 4 romance novels I’ve read this year – it’s just the top 4 most recently read […]

You Get What You Pay For

Ten Trends to Seduce your Best Friend by Penny Reid

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

When I read this, I’d been reading a lot of books that I picked up for free or for a dollar.  My thumbnail says “oh, this is why we pay for good books.” I really enjoyed Ten Trends (notes: “I didn’t want this to end”).  Winnie is a teacher, and Byron is an author of some renown.  He’s clearly on the autism spectrum, but no attempt is made to “redeem” him, make him more “normal,” or suggest that he needs to change in any way.  […]

Penny Reid’s Three Kings Series – Books One & Two

Homecoming King by Penny Reid

Drama King by Penny Reid

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I’m just going to admit up front that I find Penny Reid’s books totally delightful.  I started out in the Knitting in the City series, and have read everything I could get my hands on since.  So perhaps I’m not entirely objective when reviewing this latest series, but again, they’ve really worked for me. There’s a big focus on Found Family (as opposed to blood family) in her novels, and the Three Kings series (book three still pending) focuses on three friends from a small […]

I wanted to like this one more than I did

Grin and Beard It by Penny Reid

December 12, 2022 by AnnaCollier 4 Comments

I’ve had the Winston brothers series recommended to me by several friends, so I decided to give it a try. I started with Grin and Beard It, the second book in the series (the titles are all beard themed, in case you hadn’t guessed that already), because the first book was checked out from my local library and I am a chaos muppet. Grin and Beard It tells the story of Sienna Diaz, an actress and screenwriter who is shooting a film in rural Tennessee. […]

I reread this book specifically so I could start CBR 13 with it.

Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid

January 30, 2021 by thegirlwhogotoverit 1 Comment

I remembered Book 1 of the Knitting in the City series as utterly charming – I can’t resist a tall dark and handsome grump brought low by a dorky heroine, and Quinn & Janie delivered for me.  I intended to reread this one alone, review it, and then get back to The Stand (I make so many inconvenient promises to myself, and this “reread before watching the new series” is bang on form), but found myself in the middle of a Total Rereid of the whole […]

My first foray into Penny Reid’s writing

Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid

Neanderthal Marries Human by Penny Reid

July 22, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

#CBR11 Bingo: Reading the TBR (have been on my TBR list since 2015) Neanderthal Seeks Human – 3.5 stars There are three things you need to know about Janie Morris: 1) She is incapable of engaging in a conversation without volunteering TMTI (Too Much Trivial Information), especially when she is unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her more than Quinn Sullivan, and 3) She doesn’t know how to knit. After losing her boyfriend, apartment, and job in the same day, Janie Morris can’t help wondering what new torment […]
