A Monster to Heal

November 28, 2016 by melanir 7 Comments

The only thing I knew about this book when I picked it up was that there was a movie coming out (is already out?) based on it and I wanted to see said movie. So there I am, wasting time in the airport bookstore and I buy it on impulse because sometimes that is the only cure for cranky early morning flights. I then put it aside and mostly forgot about it for a week. I picked it up again last night and read it […]

Jellies aside, I’m not a huge fan of The Zeppo. But I really liked this Patrick Ness book.

Strange that I read these two books back-to-back. I didn’t intend to. I borrowed The Rest of Us Just Live Here from a friend, and picked up Geektastic at the library on a whim — the covers looked so similar, I just couldn’t resist. I’m glad I read Geektastic first, because I was so disappointed in it, that Patrick Ness couldn’t help but make me feel better. Geektastic: Stories from the Nerd Herd should be amazing. Its a collection of short stories from authors I […]

A Multiple Award Winner Which Was Good, Not Great.

I have been trying to read some of the runner up choices for book club in addition to the ones we pick. So far, I’ve read Venetia by Georgette Heyer and this book, The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness. This one feels like a bit of a cheat, since I had already requested it from the library before I put it on the list of voting options (although I had also figured out how to procure The Absolutely True Diary of […]

Not everyone has to be the Chosen One. Not everyone has to be the guy who saves the world.

August 20, 2016 by Malin 2 Comments

Growing up in a small town somewhere in America (schools, family-themed restaurant, lots of cars, a bunch of huge churches, a Wallmart, a couple of multiplexes, so many trees), Mikey and his sister Mel (don’t call her Melinda) are just trying to get through their final year of high school, hoping that something so momentous happens that the indie kids have to blow up the school gym again. Who are the indie kids, you ask? The indie kids are the ones that all the YA […]

That Was Definitely Not What I Thought It Would Be

August 9, 2016 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

The progression of this story was pretty unexpected, and not entirely in a good way, to be honest. This YA novel begins in a slow-burning fashion, focusing largely on the main character, Seth, and his memories: very character-driven. Yet about a third of the way in, there is quite a twist, that changes the whole tone of the novel, and ultimately leaves more questions and confusion at the end of everything. There is the sense that Patrick Ness is trying to create an ambiguous ending for the reader […]

“Know yourself and go in swinging.”

July 6, 2016 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I assumed Patrick Ness had written many, many YA books (because he’s really good at it) but I am so sad to find out that I’m terribly wrong — this is the last of his published works that I hadn’t read, and I’ve now read it. So cry a little tear for me. “You said we all want there to be more than this! Well, there’s always more than this. There’s always something you don’t know.” More Than This is one of those books where the main character […]
