A Western that didn’t grab me in the saddle.

April 8, 2017 by bonnie Leave a Comment

The thing I like about being part of two separate book clubs is that you get to read a variety of books that you’d never even heard or consider reading before. The thing I don’t like about belonging to two book clubs is that I spend a chunk of time reading books that I end up having no interest in or disliking. Ultimately, though, it’s not too annoying, because it’s good for me to read books I don’t choose. I’ll be interested in hearing what […]

I don’t know if I liked the book or not, but I’d definitely see the movie.

Sometimes, when you read a book, you can’t help but picture the story in your head, almost as if it were a movie. And sometimes, you get the feeling that a book was pretty much written so that it could eventually become a movie. That’s not a knock against the writers who produce books like that really. I just feel like some books are written so that they can someday be watched instead of read. And I fell like The Sisters Brothers is one of […]

Undermajordomo Minor

A Young Man, a Castle & a Very Deep Hole

January 26, 2017 by Gracey the Giant 4 Comments

Let me first just say that I am very much a fan of Patrick DeWitt. His previous book, The Sisters Brothers, delighted me with its quirky weirdness.  And Undermajordomo Minor does the same.  It’s definitely quirky, definitely weird and, like The Sisters Brothers, quite funny.  Especially if you have a sort of weird sense of humor. Undermajordomo Minor tells the story of Lucien (Lucy) Minor who leaves his home village of Bury because he doesn’t feel he has any reason to stay.  His father has passed away, […]

A Pair of Bros in Getting into Deadly Shenanigans

June 15, 2016 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

I feel like I’ve been saying this about a lot of books lately, but I just seem to want more. I’ve had The Sisters Brothers stashed on my e-reader for a few years now but haven’t gotten around to reading it until now. The writing is simple and easy to follow, and the story is interesting in that I wanted to see see what wacky antics would happen as the story progressed, but I ultimately wasn’t all that engaged by it. It’s as though certain […]
