What army base is off limits on Passover? (Fort Leavenworth) but seriously, this is a serious (but fun) story

The Passover Pet Surprise by Ana Maria Shua

September 2, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I am not sure how to start a review I look up punisher descriptions and/or other peoples reviews. Part of the publisher’s description has this mentioning how it is about freedom for the Jewish people-and their pets, and that is a good way to start my review for The Passover Pet Surprise by Ana Maria Shua. The characters in the story are visiting family for the holiday. The children are either having their first one or are old hats. But when they decide that freedom […]

Don’t pass on these Passover books

An Invitation to Passover by Rabbi Kerry Olitzky, Rabbi Deborah Bodin Cohen and Mariia Kolker

Why On This Night? : A Passover Haggadah for Family Celebration by Rahel Musleah and Louise August

January 28, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Both of the Passover books in this review are from February 2024, however, I still had online reader copies of both. The first, An Invitation to Passover by Rabbi Kerry Olitzky, Rabbi Deborah Bodin Cohen and illustrated by Mariia Kolker was read in full, while the second, Why On This Night? : A Passover Haggadah for Family Celebration by Rahel Musleah, and Louise August was skimmed. With that said, both seem to be really good Passover stories. Olitzky’s story is a younger introduction to the […]

Time for picture book reviewing again!

Tomatoes for Neela by Padma Lakshmi

Tilda Tries Again by Tom Percival

Pout-Pout Fish: Passover Treasure by Deborah Diesen

September 24, 2021 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I am hungry. (Of course, that is like saying, it is Tuesday on Tuesday.) And a fun snack is cherry or grape tomatoes for me. Therefore, when I saw the word tomatoes in the title of this picture book, I was intrigued. In Tomatoes for Neela, Neela and her mother cook dishes and show how tomatoes play a role in foods of a culture. This task also shows how culture brings families together, even if one member (say, a beloved grandmother) is far away living […]

Sundown is near, but the Passover plate is not here!

Pippa’s Passover Plate by Vivian Kirkfield

April 1, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you are looking for a book that will teach you about the celebration of Passover, Pippa’s Passover Plate by Vivian Kirkfield is not it. This is more for the young child who celebrates the holiday already and therefore familiar with the practices, symbolism and meanings behind things such as the Seder plate. There are some pieces of information about the celebration (the plate needs to be found before sundown and at the end what goes on the plate) but without explanations to why they […]
