Mystery and Superheroes

Just Like Click by Sandy Grubb

July 12, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr16bingo Horses (see below) Have you ever read a book where you thought, “This is an okay book. It’s not WOW, but not poor either.” Yet, you just can’t say that everyone should read it? That was how Just Like Click by Sandy Grubb was for me.  I started reading via an online reader copy, then found an actual copy. This helped me see things a little better/able to read a bit easier, but still, since the book was physically stiff, I didn’t like how […]

People and things we hold dear

Loose Threads: A Story about Me, Mom, and Dad by Airien Ludin

Boots by Elizabeth Pulsford

June 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

An unpleasant subject is the subject of death and grief. However, it happens, and a good way to talk about it is with a story. I will say grab two large, soft, boxes of tissues and you will need them, but you won’t regret trying out the books below. (Both were read via online reader copies.) Loose Threads: A Story about Me, Mom, and Dad written and illustrated by Airien Ludin (due mid/late October 2024) is a story about how a young girl has everything […]

Moms and Dads are rad

Some Moms by Fifi Abu

Some Dads by Fifi Abu

April 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I had a few minutes before bed the other night and had a need for a quick read, so I picked up two goofy, lovable picture books by Fifi Abu. Find an image of Abu, as they look everything like a Fifi, but nothing like what I expected (which is fantastic, as the author is half the fun of a book for me). And  if you found that image on the book, well, read the book(s)!  As well as the author burb. Spoiler: as a […]

Once upon a time there were two emails

The Magic Box: A Book of Opposites by Charles Ghigna

What Love Looks Like by Laura Obuobi

Danté Plays His Blues by Allen R. Wells

April 16, 2024 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

Once upon a time there were two emails in my work email that said, “Please give our books a chance!” So I did. And out of the almost 10 titles I read via online reader copies, I found three I enjoyed and wanted to review.  The Magic Box: A Book of Opposites by Charles Ghigna and illustrated by Jacqueline East had potential. However, due to the minimal text, it missed the OMG BBE (Best Book Ever) mark by a smidgen. There were not as many […]

No strikes, but a ball

Fox Point's Own Gemma Hopper: (A Graphic Novel) by Brie Spangler

March 11, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I enjoyed Fox Point’s Own Gemma Hopper: (A Graphic Novel) more than I thought, yet, not as much as I had hoped. The idea of “only having value is when you play baseball (but not actually, of course),” was the point, but not fleshed out enough to make you believe it. Plus, the father’s “apology” to Gemma at the end is only because now he has “two baseball players in the family” so now he’ll “step up” and “help my daughter. Who, by the way, […]

A game of reality

Lo and Behold by Wendy Mass

January 18, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR16SweetChallenge #Cozy (has a feeling of cozy, and deals with themes in a less intense manner) The graphic novel Lo and Behold by Wendy Mass and illustrated by Gabi Mendez is a sweet story about Addy, a young girl who must learn to have empathy, sympathy and forgiveness for her father, mother, and most importantly, herself. There is a lot about VR technology and its real world applications. Adults can enjoy it as well as kids (strong 8/9 to 12-13). There is a little about […]
