Corey’s faith

Visitations by Corey Egbert

October 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Visitations by Corey Egbert is more of a rating of 3.5 than a pure 4 as there were areas I would have liked to have seen “more” of the story (I like that we don’t have a lot of “before divorce” (just enough to let you know what has happened) but seeing more of the Visitations (what their mother calls the time Corey and his sister, Sarah, have with their father) would be interesting. Afterall, this is part of the title. And I would have […]

A Story about Cancer with a Happy Ending by India Desjardins

August 30, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

We know there will be a happy ending in A Story about Cancer with a Happy Ending, as the title tells us that. Therefore this Columbo-like story (if you know what that means, we can be friends) by India Desjardins (and Solange Ouellet is the translator) of knowing the ending, but seeing how the characters get there, does not have a surprise at the end, but it does have an emotion that has not been felt for a while in these characters lives: Hope.  Told […]

A Navy family takes a trip to home

Goodbye, Hello: A Going Home Travel Adventure by Angela H. Dale

August 29, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Me the other day looking at online reader copies: Nope, don’t want to read that. Not that one. Oh, I’ll save that. Okay, what do we have here? A sailor and their kid? Nope. Is there anything I want to read????  A few days later: Again, nope, nope, oh it’s that sailor again… I just read something about it…okay let’s try Goodbye, Hello: A Going Home Travel Adventure.  I expected Angela H. Dale’s book to be about a sailor who comes home to his family […]

The Lonely Book by Meg Grehan

August 12, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I know it is odd to start a review with a negative, but I want to get it out of the way. I did not like The Lonely Book as much as Meg Grehan’s other titles. This one felt younger than the ones I have read and I was expecting something more mature. With that said, I still enjoyed this addition to their collection of prose poetry novels. Most of Grehan’s books deal with LGBTQ+ issues as well as mental health. This time we are […]

Having fun and making money

Art Club by Rashad Doucet

July 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Art Club by Rashad Doucet is fun. It has a modern take on things, has a mostly diverse cast, and while we know the coming of age story, it is fresh. Best for ages 10 and up (younger can read, but I’m not sure the concepts would be okay for some. Content is fine). There were a few bumps (things solved too conveniently, a few cliches for the adult characters) but overall everything works well. The idea is how the adults in our main character’s […]

More toymakers for the children!

Asha and the Toymaker by Sakshi Mangal

July 19, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr16bingo  Bollywood (child lives in a village of India and the author is from Mumbai, India)   Asha and the Toymaker by Sakshi Mangal is something that one needs to experience themselves. I can say it is about Asha and her father in India. I can say that she is a young girl whose father wants her to study hard, not worry about money (that is his job to raise money so she can go to school) and have the opportunities that he did not […]
