Ok, I think I Get It Now

March 31, 2016 by sarah_jwh 2 Comments

This review is for the audiobook version of Magic Burns, by Ilona Andrews, the second book in the Kate Daniels series. After the rough start I had with the first Kate Daniels book, I decided to start the second one before I could forget everything that had happened. I don’t think this was actually necessary, as the authors did a good job of refreshing my memory in the first couple of chapters, while also moving the plot along. This time Kate is once again working […]

La Diva Tarabotti returns to her home planet.

This series continues to be witty, fluffy fun. It’s really difficult not to just read one of these books in one sitting. They go down like ice cream on a hot day. With the exception of this one thing that I’ll get to later, there really isn’t much to say about this book. Carriger’s writing continues to be witty and fun, and sly in all the best ways. Her sense of humor is definitely in line with mine. Her characters are flawed and lovable. Her […]

Third Time’s the Charm

This review is for the audiobook version of Magic Bites, by Ilona Andrews. I tried this one again, on Emmalita’s recommendation. I’d attempted it in the past, and just couldn’t get into it, but I’m glad I gave it another chance. Once I made it past the first hour, I was hooked! (I’ve even got book two waiting for me to finish this review) Kate Daniels is a magical mercenary, ready to help whoever will pay her, but when her estranged uncle is murdered, she […]

‘Pride and Prejudice’ meets ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ is actually a pretty apt comparison.

March 3, 2016 by narfna 12 Comments

Pretty dang soon after I finished up reading Eon and Eona late last year, I learned that Alison Goodman had a new YA fantasy series about to start up. Since her first series was complicated and interesting and took lots of risks (even if they didn’t always work), I was already intrigued by the promise of a new series from her, but when I saw her refer to it as “Pride and Prejudice meets Buffy in English high society”, I pretty much needed to read […]

I Promise The Next Review Will Be Positive

February 6, 2016 by sarah_jwh 6 Comments

I don’t know if I’m in a pissy kind of mood recently, or if I just haven’t been listening to good books, but here’s another bad review. This is another paranormal book from a series, but in this case the rest of the series was ok, not great, but fine for doing dishes or folding laundry to. In this instalment, we jump away from all of the original characters and storylines from the first 12 (don’t read the first one, it was SO BAD I […]

“Welcome to fucking Wonderland” or, Adventures in Mathmagic Land

January 20, 2016 by crystalclear 5 Comments

Our adventures take place in a slightly dystopian future, where some people can tap into extra parts in their brains and gain X-men-like powers.  The people who have strong powers are called Greater-Thans, because they can access more than 10% of their brains at once.  Your “integration” level is the percentage of your brain you can use.  Normal people can only access 10% or less, so they are called Fractions, for a fraction of 10% (which doesn’t make sense to me, but whatever.)  Powers include […]
