I Feel Guilt Over the Two Stars Rating

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

October 29, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

I loved this book when it first came out and I have to say that my re-read of this was painful. Why did I like this so much? Did I not see that Matthew was uber possessive which is my least favorite hero trait? The constant endearments in French may me roll my eyes. Also the Mary Sueness of Diana was beyond ridiculous. She gets powers on top of powers and also decides that the only thing that matters is her love for Matthew. She […]

Antoine Revoy, you are a mean, mean, meeean, man!

Animus by Antoine Revoy

August 22, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

animus [ an-uh-muh s ]   NOUN strong dislike or enmity; hostile attitude; animosity. purpose; intention; animating spirit. (in the psychology of C. G. Jung) the masculine principle, especially as present in women (contrasted with anima).   How can you sleep at night knowing you crushed my soul? How could you rip my heart out? How dare you create a horrific masterpiece? Was the clue I saw a clue? Animus is a graphic novel I found by accident. First/Second mentioned that they had acquired Revoy’s latest graphic […]

Sophronia and her series both Finish.

Manners & Mutiny (Finishing School, #4) by Gail Carriger

April 25, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was a nice ending to the series, pretty on par with the quality of the rest of the books, so if you liked those, you’ll like this one, too. I’ve just been slightly underwhelmed with this series as a whole, so I was just slightly underwhelmed with this book in the same way. I got really excited about the ending of the third book, but she didn’t really take it anywhere super exciting, just medium exciting. I did like the last two books more […]

“The colonizer writes the history, winning twice: A theft of land. A theft of witness.”

Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray

March 30, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

In this third installment of Bray’s fantastic Diviners series, Libba Bray finally pulls together many moving pieces and lays down the major themes of the series with gusto. If I could sum it up in one phrase, I’d call this book “Ghosts are scary, but not as scary as evangelism” Or “Ghosts are scary, but it’s your fault.” The Diviners are a diverse group of supernaturally talented young people in 1920s NYC (who aren’t officially called “The Diviners” but simply “diviners” at this point).  In […]

Abbott by Saladin Ahmed, Sami Kivelä

March 13, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Abbott is a brief, five-issue series set in 1970s Detroit about journalist Elena Abbott, lone black female reporter at the Detroit Daily. Abbott prefers to delve into the stories the paper’s board would rather not see printed. She’s recently getting heat for her piece on the death of a black teen at the hands of police, but so far she’s been protected by her loyal boss. She has a new case on the horizon and it’s a grisly one.  A mutilated police horse is found […]

Sexy swamp people.

November 7, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

Short review, because I read this over a month ago. It actually took me forever to read it! I had this book out in ebook form from the library three times before I read it. They kept taking it away from me before I could work up the energy or desire. I finally caved and just bought a Kindle copy, and of course that’s the one that ended up sticking, since I owned it forevermore, I went ahead and read it the next day. Sigh. […]
