Not the Witch You Wed

“Congratulations, Wolfman. You’re officially fake-dating the Not-So-Magicless Maxwell.”

Not the Witch You Wed by April Asher

February 9, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

Much like the cover suggests, this is a hilariously funny second-chance fake-dating paranormal rom-com. If that sounds like trope soup, well, it is, but it’s also extremely tasty. “Congratulations, Wolfman. You’re officially fake-dating the Not-So-Magicless Maxwell.” Violet and Lincoln grew up together. They’d been childhood enemies, then friends, then high school sweethearts… until the day they planned to escape his toxic dad, and Lincoln didn’t show. Fourteen years later, he’s now the Alpha of the North American Pack and she’s, well, still the Magicless Maxwell. As […]

It’s a cozy trashy romance!

Match with the Demon by Chace Verity

January 30, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

It’s a cozy trashy romance! All of the author’s cozy demon romances have been an absolute delight, and this one is no different. While past books have dealt with single parents of teens and elementary schoolers, this one has an empty nester. “It was probably too late to freak out over having a greasy Valentine’s Day meal in a sports bar with an actual demon. But it was not too late to be thoroughly confused. How had he matched with a demon on his first […]

“She accepted the visit and lived in anticipation, wondering what was to come. It was November 19, 1950. She would be dead in ten days.”

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James

January 17, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m not going to compare this to The Sun-Down Motel, which is the only other book of hers I’ve read, because they are very different books, which I wasn’t expecting because of their seeming similarities (dual timelines, ghosts, murder). And on its own, I enjoyed listening to this book very much. (Rebecca Lowman does a good job with the narration, although her male performances sometimes slip into silliness.) The two timelines are: Vermont, 1950, at the boarding school of Idlewind, a school for girls who […]

Of Mates & Magic

Cool cover, repetitive plot

Of Mates & Magic by Maggie Francis

January 13, 2022 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

I’ve been very much enjoying small town paranormal romances lately, so when I saw the gorgeous cover, I simply had to try this one out. While it definitely met all those criteria, I wanted a bit more from the main couple. Seb has known from his first few days in Eliza Falls that Cora, who runs a witchy-sort-of-boutique in town with her best friend, is his mate, but after a year he’s still not been able to do more than grunt at her. When the witches […]

Proper Scoundrels

“If you want to be the villain of the two of us, I’m sorry, but you’ll have to try harder.”

Proper Scoundrels by Allie Therin

January 4, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

This is a spin-off of the author’s Magic in Manhattan series, which I absolutely adored. I was a little worried about this book because it stars two somewhat villains (and afraid I would miss the characters from the previous book, Arthur and Rory) but this book is just as excellent as the previous ones. While it’s not directly connected to the previous series, I don’t think it would work without some knowledge of it (and this review will contain spoilers for that series). “I’m the […]

Esteban and Tristan went into this nightmare and came out with more than they bargained for

The Nightmare Brigade #1: The Case of the Girl from Deja Vu by Frank Thillez

November 10, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I first found  The Nightmare Brigade #1: The Case of the Girl from Deja Vu by Frank Thillez, and illustrated by Yomgui Dumont as a preview e-reader. I was so in love with the start that I emailed the address at the bottom of the link sent to tell them! A few months later, chapters one and two were available in a full e-reader. (And once again, I recommend signing up for the newsletter from Papercutz if you and/or a child in your life likes […]
