The journey back home

Frontera by Julio Anta

May 4, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I first picked up the reader copy of Frontera, even having seen it advertised in multiple newsletters and as an online reader copy, I only noticed the kid on the front cover. I missed the ghost figure in the back. The colors of this cover I am assuming are meant to represent the desert our narrator is traveling through, but it washes out the man in the background. However, this is an interesting design choice as this character is an interesting piece of the […]

As much as I like this series, I give you two more volumes and please finish the story arc

The Nightmare Brigade V03 Finding Alice by Franck Thillez

April 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In many ways, volume three of The Nightmare Brigade: Finding Alice is both my least due to changes happening to the characters and some of the new characters added are not “fleshed out” enough (hopefully that is a “yet”). However, it is also a favorite due to getting the bigger picture we had had established in the first two volumes by Franck Thillez. This time, even though we have entered the nightmares of others, this time it feels heavier on the fantasy and science elements. […]

Talk about being Ghosted

Forever Home by Jenna Ayoub

December 13, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

We talk about pets having a forever home, but sometimes people need them, too. And it is not because they are homeless, or need adoption, but because they and their family will travel a lot, such as being in the service. And Willow, is one of those people. When her family moves to Hadleigh House and promise this is the last move, Willow is overjoyed and will do anything to stay. Even match wits with four ghosts (two spicy sisters (one has a thing about […]

The Ojja-Wojja by Magdalene Visaggio

November 22, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Disclaimer: This is a HarperCollins book. The Ojja-Wojja by Magdalene Visaggio is an interesting book about representation and friendship. There is the usual bully vs. the “others” with a little supernatural (okay a lot of supernatural) added to the mix. There maybe is a bit too much cliched story arc for the adult reader but the at least 10 and up crowd will have fun. Though I have not watched it, this seems like a younger Stranger Things with a modern setting. We follow two girls, […]

“It’s the waters within you that scare me.”

Witchful Thinking by Celestine Martin

November 13, 2022 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

CBR14Bingo – Time: Is it (finally) the right time for Lucy and Alex, aka the question every second chance romance ever asks? Its release also had an unusual timing – it’s clearly set during the summer and has a beach read feel, but was released just in time for Halloween vibes season. I don’t know what’s with the abundance of cozy witchy romances lately, but I am all here for it! Even with the witchy vibes, this is more of a beach read as it’s […]

If Enemy Pie, Casper the friendly ghost, and Dr. Doolittle made a book

Batcat by Meggie Ramm

November 8, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Batcat by Meggie Ramm is a cute story about not being just one thing, but a mix of things that makes you, you and special. Batcat has a problem. It is called a Ghost. A very annoying, obnoxious ghost. You see, Batcat wants to be alone. Drink their hot chocolate alone. Sleep alone. Eat alone. Watch tv alone. Play video games alone. And most importantly, when they have an ice cream craving, they want to go to the freezer and find their ice cream not eaten […]
