Rachel Morgan: A Good Witch & Tough as Nails Bounty Hunter

December 14, 2014 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

Whilst perusing the sci-fi/fantasy section of my library, I stumbled across the 2nd book in Kim Harrison’s Hollows series. Absentmindedly, I was half way through it before realizing it wasn’t the introductory book. As reading more books is a better move for any cannonball participant, I switched over to Dead Witch Walking ASAP. We’re introduced to a leather clad Rachel Morgan on a Leprechaun stake out in a seedy Cincinnati bar. She’s a white earth witch who relies on her wits and if all else fails […]

No, the heroine is NOT a burlesque streetwalker, despite what the cover may imply

November 8, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

In an alternate history Victorian London with Steampunk gadgets, werewolves, a ruling nobility known as the Echelon, where the men are all enhanced with vampire blood, Miss Honoria Todd (who certainly doesn’t in any way dress or appear anything like the burlesque streetwalker on the cover of the book) has been forced to move to the Rookeries of Whitechapel after the death of her father. She is working as an elocution coach under an assumed name to support her younger sister (who also takes in […]

If you go into the woods today, beware the bunnies (and all the other animals)

October 26, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

Nurse Letitia “Tish” Everett has only really started recovering from her very controlling, emotionally and physically abusive fiancee Jeff, when she’s drawn to a tarnished antique locket at an estate sale and actually ends up shocking herself by stealing it. After managing to force it open, she is splashed by luminous crimson liquid. Inside the locket, there is a portrait of a darkly handsome man she think of as a “naughty Mr. Darcy” and a foreign inscription of some kind. Falling asleep with the locket […]

Cannonball Accomplished :)

September 29, 2014 by NTE 16 Comments

It’s the summer of 1927, and Winter Magnusson is one of San Francisco’s top bootleggers.  He runs both quality fish and top-shelf booze in from the California coast, and it’s worth the top dollar he can charge for it – no bathtub gin to be found here. He seems well-known and respected in the community, even if he’s got a suspicious accident in his past, and a scar on his face as a constant reminder.  He’s also got a supernatural hit out on him, and […]

Riding on my last nerve

September 26, 2014 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

Larissa Ione’s Lords of Deliverance series is a spinoff of her fairly popular Demonica series, which was uneven but I found enjoyable as a whole. As in that series, LoD’s strengths lie in very interesting worldbuilding and a strong over-arching plotline that ties the standalone novels together. The romances, however, are derivative, with the characters so similar to each other, and the love scenes are also all written so very similarly, that they all become a sweaty, thrusty, moany, roaring blur. Also, this series had A REALLY AWFUL THING, […]

Ugh (a review in Drag Race gifs)

August 15, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 13 Comments

No Rest for the Wicked was almost offensively boring, and when it wasn’t boring, it was offensive. It also has 4.3 stars on Goodreads. I don’t think this book bothers to take itself seriously, so I won’t give it a serious review. Kresley Cole essentially plagiarizes herself with every novel, so I see no problem with taking plagiarism to its logical end and relying mostly on the work of others to get my point across here. I’m going with RuPaul and her girls as my muses […]
