Despite being well-versed in the urban fantasy genre, I had yet to dive into the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones. It’s a new year, so why not jump into a new one? 🙂 First Grave on the Right introduces us to a tired and bruised Charley Davidson being woken up from a very sexy dream by a dead lawyer. Needless to say, she’s pretty peeved. Before she can get her bearings, her police detective Uncle Bob (UB for short) calls her to a murder scene. […]
The fire’s starting to die out a bit now
3.5 stars Spoiler warning! This is the third and final book in the trilogy, and will without a doubt contain spoilers for the earlier books in the series. Don’t read this review if you want to remain unspoiled and aren’t caught up with the previous two books. If you want to start at the beginning, book 1 (by far the best book in the series) is A Promise of Fire. Cat and her warlord husband Griffin have defeated the rulers of tyrannical Tarva and united two thirds […]
Prophecies, magic and lust
A Promise of Fire is the first entry in Amanda Bouchet’s Kingmaker Chronicles. Our heroine protagonist, Cat, has been on the run for the past 8 years. At the start of this novel, she blends in with a magical circus. She tells fortunes and does fire tricks to pay her way. The circus becomes her adopted family with Cat helping out with performances from time to time. Things were going pretty well until a strange man catches her eye. He gives off the aura of a warrior […]
Needs a Dash More Spider’s Eye
The Familiar is the start to a paranormal romance series, but I didn’t find it enjoyable enough to continue on with the series. It’s not offensive, it’s just meh. It contains just a tad too much sexual assault for my liking, and it’s not funny at all for a book that bills itself as a ‘Paranormal Romantic Comedy”. Tom is a man who got himself turned into a cat by an evil witch back. Thirty or forty years later Tom is still stuck as a […]
Patience Didn’t Save Me From This Book
Nope. Nope. Nopenopenopenopenopenope. I can’t think of a better way to tell you all about this book. It’s just… bad. And not entertaining bad, or annoyingly bad, or even stupidly misogynistic bad. It’s just… bad. The characters are trite. The writing is bland and full of telling not showing. The plot is rote and any ‘surprises’ are telegraphed from page one. The book also contains one of my pet peeves in novels about shape shifting humans where human physiology is assumed to be the same […]
Brownies and Broomsticks – Because Sometimes You Need to Read Fluff.
I usually alternate serious books with fluffy books. This book may just be the epitome of fluff. I was on maternity leave for 6 months and, let me tell you, I did not have the brainpower to watch a TV show let alone read a complicated book. So when Audible recommended a “cozy mystery” for me, I was intrigued. Katie Lightfoot just broke off her engagement and moved from Ohio to Savannah to open a bakery with her aunt and uncle. Just as their bakery […]
