Splashing into the Rivers of London

Midnight Riot by Ben Aaronovitch

May 6, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 2 Comments

I’d seen this author and series pop up from time to time in CBR, and my curiosity finally overcame my aversion to jumping into a series. How could I continue to ignore the siren call of that terrific cover?! I am ever-so-glad that I went ahead and judged a book by its cover, because I thoroughly enjoyed this police-procedural-gone-off-the-rails. It had all of the inner workings of the police bureaucracy that I, for some reason  find strangely enthralling. The officers had all of the spark […]

The one where Rachel goes on an ill-advised banshee hunt

December 30, 2016 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

It has taken me three years to circle back to the first book from The Hollows series I found at the library. I unwittingly checked out and read a page from White Witch, Black Curse before realizing it was the seventh in the series! The completist that I am returned it. I finally started with book one in 2014. I’m probably the only one spacing out this series over so many years. 😉 ****Major spoilers for previous books in the series to follow**** Rachel Morgan has been through the […]

A great series addition and a filler novel

December 5, 2016 by Ellepkay Leave a Comment

The Rivers of London/Peter Grant series continued on a strong note with books 4 and 5 in the series.  I read these back to back, and decided to combine my reviews. Recap from Books 1-3:  Peter Grant is a magician’s apprentice as well as a policeman in modern London.  His special unit investigates and solves crimes involving paranormal phenomena.  Most of the magician population was wiped out during WWII, but a newly trained dark magician is plotting something big while lots of other paranormal happenings […]

“Like young men from the dawn of time, I decided to choose the risk of death over certain humiliation.”

November 15, 2016 by Ellepkay 4 Comments

This is the third book in the Peter Grant/Rivers of London series, and so far my favorite.  This is definitely a series you want to read in order.  Each book has added on to the story and the Big Bad that is being built up flows through the books.  But, if you’re looking for an alternate world (that is diverse and inclusive), this is a fun one to join. It’s really hard to write about the plot without giving anything away.  So much of the […]

“Not right now. I’m not wearing my stabby clothes.”

March 16, 2016 by NVVN Leave a Comment

You ever have one of those days when you find bits of a corpse, but it doesn’t belong to any of the zombies?  Foxtrot has and it’s not even the weirdest part of her day.  Actually, it’s just another day working at her boss ZZ’s mansion, where there are always guests (who are often weird), zoo animals to take care of (yes, ZZ has a zoo on her estate) and a spiritual Crossroads to maintain. The zombies aren’t real (they’re part of a film set), […]

A small Texas town is crossroad of supernatural secrets

December 30, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I’m a big fan of Charlaine Harris as she tends to write humorous mystery tales with a big dollop of hot romance. I’ve read all of the Sookie Stackhouse, Harper Connelly and Lily Bard books. As the last few Sookie books sucked, I wasn’t super keen to return to her body of work. However, once I learned Manfred Bernardo from the Harper books was the protagonist, my interest shot up by 100 percent. Manfred moves to Midnight into a house owned by no other than the handsome […]
