“Maybe she is reaching out because she has sent another man to his grave prematurely. Or maybe she wants to know if I can buy eggs on the way home. Either way, I’m not picking up.”

My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 15/30 Objectively, this should be getting a higher rating, but I found it rather agonizing to listen to, just because of personal preference. It’s actually really smart and really well done, and I think it accomplishes exactly what it’s trying to do. I should have figured this might happen, though. Satires are love them or hate them for me. And, really, I didn’t hate this! I just sort of hated listening to it. It made me feel […]

What to do with the murderous siblings?

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

April 9, 2021 by Singsonggirl 1 Comment

A darkly fun, twisted ride, exactly what I needed to clean my palate. I’ve been cursed a little with my book reading lately, one I really liked I forgot at my father’s place before finishing it and another one that I’m reading is amazing, but also so freaking depressing, I manage like five pages and then I need some time to recover from them. This I found by chance, I remembered the cover from the bestseller stacks, ordered it and devoured it in one day. […]

Serial killer? I hardly new her!

My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

From the first few paragraphs, the book instantly catches your attention.  I don’t think it is a spoiler to say that our narrator’s sister,is indeed a serial killer. The book opens with Ayoola calling Korede for help in cleaning up a mess — a bloody mess.  They are sisters living in Lagos, Nigeria.  Our narrator is Korede, she is ordinary looking, fastidious and methodical. A hard worker.  She works as a nurse and is efficient but unfriendly.  In fact, her only confidante is a patient […]

If any of my siblings are reading this, I won’t dispose of a body for you

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

Korede is nothing if not efficient. Her sister Ayoola throws problems at her feet, and Korede solves them. Quickly, quietly, smoothly. She loves Ayoola, even though most of the problems she’s been thrown recently have been the bodies of Ayoola’s boyfriends. All killed in self-defense, of course. Ayoola would never do something so awful on purpose. She’s too beautiful, too glamourous, too young to do such a thing. At Korede’s day job as a nurse, she’s just as efficient. She finishes all her work in […]

“I am more haunted by her actions than she is.”

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

I’ve been dreading reviewing this, honestly. I feel like everyone loved this book. I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it. For me, it was like politely – experiencing? Not quite enjoying, not quite enduring – the company of someone you aren’t quite at ease around, don’t quite get, don’t quite like, but respect enough to not want to be rude. The plot isn’t really hiding many potential spoilers. Ayoola and Korede are sisters. They live in Nigeria. There father was abusive. Their mother is […]

These little collections are great in a very specific way; the stories are quick, unique from each other, and can be accessed through both the Kindle and Audible. If I have just a few minutes to listen while doing chores, I can pop in and out without needed to re-immerse myself in something long and complicated! If I have a long line at the Post Office, I can stand and read the majority of a story while I wait. Low impact, low commitment, and decent […]
