Queen of Play Makes Everyone’s Day

Odder: An Otter's Story (Picture book) by Katherine Applegate and Charles Santoso

January 30, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was in the right mood the other day when I found an online copy of Odder: An Otter’s Story (Picture book) by Katherine Applegate and Charles Santoso (the lovely illustrator). Because this book could be considered overly saccharine and too sugary sweet. And when something is overly sweet I can really be a real Scrooge and a Humbug it. Yet, I was in the mood for something sweet, cuddly that just might make you have a tear (or ten) in your eye. Due in […]

The Julie Abery Show

Baby Stegosaurus by Julie Abery

Baby T. Rex by Julie Abery

Little Otter by Julie Abery

Little Walrus by Julie Abery

April 28, 2023 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

Both Julie Abery board books, Baby Stegosaurus and Baby T. Rex are due in August 2023. However, I had the opportunity to read them via an online reader copy. And they are exactly what you think they would be. Really cute, simple, and quick stories about a baby dinosaur doing things. One is trying to save an egg that has rolled out of the nest, and the other is trying to catch up to their family. Both have exciting adventures along the way to the […]

I’m really getting into these Nobrow Press books

The Perfect Rock by Sarah Nobel

June 9, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The story of The Perfect Rock was so-so for me. However, the illustrations of Sarah Nobel made the book well, almost perfect. Nobrow Press really has some fun, informative, interesting, and cute reads. Nobel’s story deals with sibling rivalry and family.  The publisher description says independence as well, but I really did not see that. I did see how three otter siblings realize that while they need the perfect rock, they do not want one that causes them to argue, to fight and not be […]

Pup 681: A Sea Otter Rescue Story by Jean Reidy

May 27, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Pup 681: A Sea Otter Rescue Story is based loosely on an actual situation of an otter (Luna of the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago) being rescued. After I finished reading, I was not sure I liked this cute, poetic story of a baby otter and the adventure it takes to find their home. I feel that is probably since it was too cute for me in places, and maybe also even too short. But this book can be fun for the right audience. There are […]

Hear the Fearsome War Cry of the River Otter! Ic-yang!

Tarka the Otter by Henry Williamson

July 9, 2020 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

Set in rural Devon and written in 1928, this is the life story of Tarka, the river otter, written as an unsentimental biography, from birth to death.  Williamson had an unusual talent of presenting the life of a wild creature just as is.  Well, there are some names, but that is only so that one can distinguish one creature from another.  Otherwise, they are very much not anthropomorphized.   The language, though, is a delight.  It’s not written in a dialect, per se, but rather […]

Baaaaby Otter swimmin’ around, looking so cute, should have a crown….

If You Take Away the Otter by Susannah Buhrman-Deever

June 25, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Every time I see this title, If You Take Away the Otter I wonder, “Why would you take away the otter? They are cute and fluffy and smart and funny and cute…”  Only once upon a time, some people did take away the otters (by various ways, and mostly (if not all) were environmentally unfriendly ones). Therefore, Susannah Buhrman-Deever created a fun story filled with facts (with extra information on the sides and at the end) to allow your child to grow with the book. […]
