“Knowledge is Carnage”

The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake

April 1, 2022 by anana Leave a Comment

The Atlas Six came highly recommended by a friend, who is much cooler and trendier than I am and found it via something called “BookTok” which I hear is all the rage with the youths. The same friend was kind enough to lend me her library card credentials to be able to check it out from Libby, because there was a six month wait to check it out using my home library card!  The plot of The Atlas Six is a fairly standard “magic school” […]

“Nature is chaos, magic is order, but they are not wholly unrelated.”

The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake

After seeing this book blowing up everywhere on BookTok, I was curious enough to try it out myself, especially after seeing that it had been acquired by Tor. In the past, recommendations from there have been hit or miss, and unfortunately, this one was a bit of a miss. “Nature is chaos, magic is order, but they are not wholly unrelated.” Every decade, six medeians – magicians – are picked by the secretive Alexandrian Society (yes, as in the Library of Alexandria) to compete for […]

If in his eyes you are not the target, then you can be sure you are the weapon.

I am giving The Atlas Six 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars, because I struggled with my focus while reading it, but I also really wanted to know what happened. This was one of those books I thought about not finishing, so I read the end to see if I wanted to go there. I did. The ending made the beginning more interesting and made me keep picking up the book when my attention wandered. The problem is, my attention wandered a lot. Every ten […]

Half-baked fantasy, over-baked drama.

The Atlas Six (The Atlas, #1) by Olivie Blake

This self-pubbed book apparently blew up on BookTok, and honestly, from the other books that have done that (an older Colleen Hoover release, for example), I should have known this one wouldn’t be perfectly to my taste, but I was curious! Also, the synopsis sounded great, and I liked the look of the cover. It is now being re-released in 2022 after having been picked up by Tor. I do hope they whip it into shape a little, but my fear is they will let […]

Intriguing premise (but which I thought was a standalone, reader beware it is not)

The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake

This is definitely a 3.5 star book rounded down, and after reading an interview with the author that came out literally today I think I understand why (and am more comfortable with the rounding down). I also want to call out a total party foul–there’s no indication that this book is meant to be the first in a series, and if you’re like me and averse to spoilers there’s no way to search around for if there is a second book without potentially running into spoilers. Short […]
