Succession, but make it magic

Gifted & Talented by Olivie Blake

April 25, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

Olivie Blake is one of those authors that I like, but recognize the flaws in her writing enough that I rarely recommend her work (so, only if I know more about the personality and preferences of the person I would be recommending it to). She tends to write books where the plot goes completely off the rails, but something about her writing style really vibes with me. Her characters are frequently unlikeable but have realistic flaws (somewhat uncomfortably, ones that are relatable enough to me) […]

Nowhere Nothing and I Don’t Care All At Once

The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake

January 14, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Potentially unpopular opinion forthcoming: I didn’t think The Atlas Six was all that great. There is little plot; not much happens in detail except time passing and people wondering what is going on with {insert current person and/or situation of concern here}. Not much happens with characters either; what is {person} hiding from the group and/or themselves? What is being hidden from them that might possibly matter? There is also not a lot of world building; this is a world in which there is magic […]

Masters of Death by Olivie Blake

September 10, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 19: Queer Lives I’m not sure where I saw the blurb for Masters of Death but it was pretty catchy; it also did not hint at the queerness within, but that’s ok. I have to say, I found this pretty enjoyable. There are about 8 main characters, some more main than others, and half of the book revolves around them finding or re-finding their special person. Everyone is ‘inter-species’ to some extent, and one of the more important couples is  same sex; the member […]

Make this a TV show right now!

The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake

August 21, 2023 by carmelpie 3 Comments

Because I would watch the HELL out of it. CBR15Bingo: Sex square. From here she could taste the burning edges of his thoughts. He wasn’t just afraid of something—he was afraid of everything. He hated this house, and the memories in it. The memories themselves were knives, glinting in the light. They pricked her fingers, warning her away. The taste of him on her tongue, real and imagined was burnt sugar, wild adoration, tender rage. Poor thing, poor desperate thing. ― Olivie Blake, The Atlas […]

Not as good as book one, but sets up an exciting book three

The Atlas Paradox by Olivie Blake

January 22, 2023 by KateMc Leave a Comment

This sequel was a lot of wheel-spinning, ennui, and existential angst; since that’s basically my life all the time, I had to put this book aside for a couple of weeks, even though I’d scrambled to get my hands on it as soon as I finished book one (The Atlas Six).  In book one, the six are identified as the most powerful medeians (magicians) in the world and invited to study in the protected magical archives of the exclusive Alexandrian Society; the catch is that […]

Does everyone suck? Well, at least they have magic

The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake

BINGO – Bird – As in, birds of a feather flock together Six of the best magicians are invited to join The Alexandrian Society which protects all of the knowledge of the Library of Alexandria. Six are invited to live and study at the Library, but only five will make the cut after two years. Nico and Libby are both physicist magicians who can control the forces of nature like fire, waves, and the physical aspect of things. Parisa is a telepath. Callum is an […]
