A sweet romance anthology involving middle-aged characters. #CBRBINGO – Rec’d

Sweetest in the Gale (There's Something About Marysburg, #3) by Olivia Dade

July 21, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

Olivia Dade seems to be one of those authors who is just really consistent. I have enjoyed everything I’ve read from her, and some of it (Teach Me in particular!) I’ve outright loved. I am absolutely salivating for the release of All the Feels in October. I just have such a good feeling I’m going to love it so much. This was a fun collection of novellas that range from the silly and sweet to the more serious side of the spectrum. Because the characters […]

Fugitive Telemetry (The Murderbot Diaries, #6) by Martha Wells

July 8, 2021 by narfna 3 Comments

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 13/30 I love Murderbot and I hope that I always will. What I love about these stories, beyond the immediate appeal of an outwardly misanthropic and antisocial being fighting its own feelings and personhood, is that as they go on, Wells seems to be showing that Murderbot is not just a one story kind of murder-construct (aka not that at all), but one that can play around in different genres. No one will convince me that the full-length novel […]

Some short stories to finish off this series.

Shades in Shadow (Inheritance Trilogy, #3.75) by N.K. Jemisin

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 2/30 I pre-ordered this and it downloaded on release day. In July 2015. I did this little collection a disservice by waiting six years to read it. I really had to do some Google-fu to refresh my memory on the events and the characters in the series. In the end, I still think I would have given it three stars, maybe 3.5, but it wouldn’t have been so much frickin’ work. (The Awakened Kingdom, the novella Jemisin released as […]

Tikka Chance on Me by Suleikha Snyder

September 28, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

For the first half of this book, I was so charmed I was a hair-trigger away from giving this novella five stars. It lessened in its charm in the second half, but overall I still really liked it. The set-up here is really fun, and the tone of it reflects that fun. Pinky works at her parent’s Indian restaurant, and she has been enjoying lusting from afar one of her customers, Trucker, who is unfortunately part of a biker gang. Trucker is also lusting after […]

So much goodness stuffed into one little novella.

The Black God's Drums by P. Djèlí Clark

September 2, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was very entertaining, and very refreshing. I just wish it was longer! (That seems to be a common complaint.) This is an alternate history and steampunk fantasy novella set in New Orleans post-Civil War. In this version of history, the Civil War ended with two separate Americas, and New Orleans also seceded into a neutral city-state that is heavily diverse, and populated by many people from the free Caribbean region. Our main character is Creeper (given name Jacquelin, but don’t call her that, she […]

“into every life a little poop must fall”

If It Bleeds by Stephen King

August 25, 2020 by narfna 4 Comments

There’s something about reading Stephen King that really fuels my creativity. And this was a good collection. The real star of these four novellas is the titular If It Bleeds, a direct sequel to The Outsider, but I think I might have actually liked it better than that book. We get some classic themes from Uncle Stevie here but he adds a modern spin to most of them that was interesting, even if some worked better than others for me. Mr. Harrigan’s Phone — 3.5 […]
