It’s not easy being green

February 22, 2014 by anotterchaos Leave a Comment

Wow, is that post title a cop out. Anyhow, this is a memoir from an Elphaba.  An Elphaba stand-by, actually. It’s a fun look, for any musical theater geek, behind the big green curtain.  What goes on in there?  What do stand-bys do?  How crazy are those costumes?  Did the flying machinery ever break down? (Not answered, BTW). It’s also a memoir of a young woman plagued with insecurities and fears of failure, both in her professional & personal lives. It began as a blog, […]

An Essential Guide To Crafting The Ten Minute Play

February 18, 2014 by KM Bezner Leave a Comment

I used this book to help me write my first ten minute play and found it immensely helpful. Garrison is easy to read and approachable, even for theatre newbies like myself. Read the full review here.

The good old days: Quite overrated, actually

February 16, 2014 by anotterchaos Leave a Comment

I began this book in October, and it seemed a bit of a slog, and I’m not sure why.  I love Bryson’s signature style of history enlivened with juicy tidbits of whimsy.  The people involved are interesting. The stories are compelling.  The year, 1927, was the year my mother was born, adding an extra element of interest for me. Maybe it was just that there were too many stories, too much to keep track of, for someone reading it piece-meal. 1927 was a busy, busy […]

No dieting? For true?

February 15, 2014 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

I’ve been on lots of diets, and have made many attempts to change up my eating to try to lose (or keep off) weight. Over the past couple of years, I’ve been reading more nutrition books (like last year’s “Good Calories, Bad Calories”) as well as a lot of articles and blogs about Fat Acceptance and Healthy At Every Size. The later repeatedly points out both how society has created all kinds of fucked up issues with food, and how in the US and other […]

It’s like the Double Dare obstacle course in book form!

February 13, 2014 by Robyn Robotron Leave a Comment

What’s a good way to get your kids interested in life science?  This book about gross stuff that’s printed in purple and green is a good start.

Godwin’s Law Doesn’t Apply

February 11, 2014 by geekchicohio 1 Comment

There is likely no rule in internet debate as well known as Godwin’s Law. The semi-satirical law coined in 1990 by author/attorney Mike Godwin states (essentially) that the invoking of Hitler or the Nazis by any participant in a debate causes the participant doing so to lose the debate. Godwin’s Law is not without its detractors: Kevin Drum of Mother Jones and liberal firebrand Glenn Greenwald have each argued for its repeal, noting rightly that since WWII analogies are so universally known they can be […]
