Book Cover: Ghost Ship

No one will ever know

August 6, 2015 by sistercoyote 7 Comments

I have, for whatever reason, a deep fascination with disasters and mysteries at sea. To the point that I’ve even watched several Really Bad™ ocean salvage movies (Ghost Ship [No relation] and Lost Voyage, I’m looking at you). And yes, I also saw Titanic. But that’s not my point. I do not spend a lot of time on the ocean, haven’t been on a boat in years (and haven’t been out of the breakwater on a boat or ship even longer ago than that), and […]

“I was starting to feel slightly superior. ‘You should soak raw almonds in water,’ I said to my friend…”

Rebecca Harrington posted a series of articles where she tries celebrity diets. Her book repeats a lot of those articles, but also includes new ones. I found the book entertaining, even though I had already read almost half of it. I loved reading about the crazier diets, and though I feel mean saying it, the harder the diet was the more I liked reading about it. There are chapters on modern celebrities, such as Gwyneth Paltrow, and classic stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth […]

Why that 4.0 GPA isn’t going to get you anywhere.

“Colleges should remember that selecting students by GPA more often benefits the faithful drudge than the original mind.” ― William Deresiewicz, Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of America’s Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life I found William Deresiewicz’s Excellent Sheep through reading one of his early articles which formed the basis for this book. As someone who attended state universities, then went to art school, I have felt the sting of feeling comfortable with my well-rounded education and intellectual curiosity, then slowly realizing that […]

Real life medical horror story.

July 21, 2015 by narfna 4 Comments

So, like you know how the first four seasons of House were super awesome and stuff? This book is sort of like that, except instead of seeing it from House’s perspective while he’s being an asshole, we see it from the patient’s, and we are intimately connected with her as she slowly and surely comes unraveled totally and completely. She has no control over her actions, she loses all sense of herself and connection with her friends and family and co-workers, and the doctors have […]

Books make the best souvenirs

July 18, 2015 by llp 8 Comments

On my recent trip to New York City, one of the non-negotiable stops on my travels was the Tenement Museum. So much of what I read when I was young was set in a romanticized version of New York, or had characters who dreamed of New York, and a lot of it talked about life in tenements. Having grown up in wide open northern Canada, I have been fascinated by that world nearly my whole life. The museum was great, and had different themes focusing […]

I love this book so much.

First, if you haven’t yet read the masterpiece that is Roxane Gay’s recap of Magic Mike XXL, go do that first. Done? Okay, so this book is nothing like that Magic Mike XXL recap, excepting that they are both written by the same very talented writer, who can slip effortlessly from writing obscene yet gut-bustingly hilarious movie recaps with a smidgen of feministic leanings, to writing very deeply personal and intelligent, well-reasoned essays about body image and sexuality and pop culture and rape and race in the […]
