I got this on a Kindle deal on Amazon – otherwise I probably would never have had occasion to read this book. As a married person, I don’t do a whole lot of dating. In fact, the whole concept terrifies me. Reading this book didn’t help much with that, but I can still say that I enjoyed it. Ansari teamed up with Eric Klienenberg, a sociologist who may also be an authority on the single life, to explore the vagaries of dating in this world […]
Who knew a book about fertilizer could be so interesting?
After reading and enjoying Hager’s Demon Under the Microscope, I was curious about his other work. The Alchemy of Air is about how we made the earth sustain more than 4 billion people by taking nitrogen out of the air and turning it into fertilizer. At the turn of the 20th century, mass starvation was a real threat–the earth simply couldn’t yield enough food to keep up with the growing human population. So chemists are tasked with solving this very, very big problem. Two chemists in particular, […]
Will the Circle Be Unbroken?
Gloria Steinem’s latest book is part auto-biography and part political philosophy. Steinem examines her early years with her family, a seminal trip to India, and her subsequent political activity through the prism of travel. Steinem presents a brief history of post-war US feminism here as well as the links between feminism and other civil rights’ movements. Steinem’s goal is to inspire readers to take risks, pursue dreams, and connect, to speak up but also to listen. As she has famously said, she does not want […]
Janeway can WRITE.
“But the fact is,” I continued, “that despite their sadness, and despite my guilt, and despite Egan’s anger, I went ahead and did what I needed to do for myself. In the end, it’s selfish.” “I think you’re wrong there. It feels selfish at the time, because the pain is excruciating, but there is no nobility in hanging on to something that is miserable and false. We have to fight for our happiness in life.” I knew I wanted to read this book as soon […]
Everybody, read this.
I’m so glad my book club picked this as our next book, because reading it made me rage hardcore and I need a group of awesome ladies and mimosas to decompress with. This book was upsetting. You’re either going to be horrified at the actual atrocities done to these women’s bodies, or you’re going to rage impotently at the ineffectual, dismissive way rape victims are treated by the law, and the way our culture almost 100% stands behind rapists. Or you will have both reactions at […]
I wanted more from this academic book about the fluidity of male sexuality.
I picked this up on a whim after a friend reviewed it on Goodreads, and I saw that my library actually had a copy. It was a really interesting reading experience, and overall, I thought Ward did a nice job explaining her points, but I also felt that it was a case of her having opinions (that are maybe right) but not enough evidence to back any of it up. She takes all these incidences and cultural stories and tries to work them into a […]
