Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles

September 17, 2016 by Malin 1 Comment

The Princess Bride is my favourite film. Probably of all time. Ask me to name my favourite book, and I really wouldn’t be able to choose, as that would very much depend on genre, my mood, the weather, what I’d eaten recently and I would frankly have trouble even narrowing down a top 10. But my favourite film is The Princess Bride. I have loved it since I first discovered it back in the late 80s (or possibly very early 90s, I can’t say exactly), […]

Going back in time would be less horrible than previously thought

September 11, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

On a lark, I rented this from my library’s audiobook section. I’d heard of Goodman’s book, How to be a Victorian, but didn’t know she had a new one about the Tudors. Heck yes I want to learn how to be a Tudor! I can’t recommend this social history of the Tudor life enough. Goodman is a such a great writer! She’s clearly smart and knows her stuff, but the writing never feels dry or like a textbook. Her wit and enthusiasm for the subject […]

Forrest Gump for the Downton Abbey Set

September 8, 2016 by AkBeagle Leave a Comment

Lady Pamela Hicks was in the room where it happened. Frequently. The daughter of the last Viceroy of India, Hicks was born in Madrid.  She was very nearly homeless during World War 1 because her mother forgot which  hotel she had sent her daughters to. She was evacuated from the family manor in London lived with the Vanderbilts in New York during World War 2 while her father commanded the British naval fleet.  She goofed around with cousin, Phillip, on the trip where he met and fell in […]

The Hamiltome.

August 23, 2016 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is an excellent book that all fans of Hamilton should read. Reading it gave me a fuller experience of the musical, it was fun to see behind the scenes stories, and Lin’s notes were always interesting. I cried while reading it (the same part I cry at while listening), and spent about a week listening to nothing but the soundtrack on a loop. So why no five stars? Like Aaron Burr, I want more. I’m never going to see the musical in person, or […]

Yet another great book from Knisley

August 21, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

Cannonball favorite Lucy Knisley just came out with a new book so of course I had to get my hands on it. Her books are always a high point in my reading life. Getting married was never something Knisley had planned for or looked forward to, so she felt like a fish out of water during much of the planning process. Something New is the story of how she and her now husband tackled their momentous wedding day and the years leading up to it. […]

Nobody puts Baby in a corner!!!

August 16, 2016 by narfna 12 Comments

I’m pretty sure I first heard about this book in a CBR review, but it must have been before we had this domain, because the only other review on the site as of now is expandingbookshelf’s, which is actually the reason I finally picked it up. Anyway, this is one of those times I’m so glad I’m a part of the online book community, because I never would have heard of this book otherwise, and it was a very worthwhile reading experience. I wouldn’t have known […]
