A fixed point in a changing age.

This was fun! I think I expected a bit more from it, but overall it was an entertaining, informative look at the phenomenon of Sherlock Holmes. First, what didn’t work for me. Dundas bases this entire book on trying to find out the answers to a central question, why has Sherlock Holmes endured, reviving and reviving over 130 years? Well, the problem here is that there isn’t really an answer to that question! There are 5,000 possible answers. It’s not something anyone will ever *know*. […]

Timing is Everything

Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania is another piece of historical non-fiction by Erik Larson, who brought us The Devil in the White City. It isn’t quite as gripping a read as its predecessor, but it’s definitely worth your time. Told from about four points of view (the German U-boat that sinks her, the passengers on the Lusitania and her captain, President Woodrow Wilson, and Room 40 of the British Intelligence Service), the book addresses the build-up to the US’s entrance into The Great […]

What is your narrative?

February 22, 2018 by Professor FluffyKitten 2 Comments

Boss Fight Book’s Baldur’s Gate II, is an analysis of the classic RPG game by writer Matt Bell. It is part of a series of non-fiction books dedicated to the analysis of video games artifacts by creators, developers writers and players. The series is kind of a mixed bag. The concept is great, a series of book which try to analyze video games and the creation of games from different point of view, and it just tickles my game developer/academic sensibility. unfortunately it always feels […]

Burn it all down

February 19, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

Obviously books about rape aren’t the easiest reads in the world, but this one actually felt easier than most. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot to get angry and be horrified about in here. It’s just that the authors presented their material in a way that wasn’t gratuitous or overwhelmingly gruesome. I felt like they walked the line between letting the reader know the full picture of what happened without going overboard on crime details. A few years ago, ProPublica and The Marshall Project […]

faintingviolet gave me this book right before Carrie Fisher died, and I’m only now not too sad to read it.

February 16, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

I’ve really been trying to make an effort in 2018 to read books I already own. Currently the amount of books I own but haven’t read, including in audio and e-book, numbers around 221. faintingviolet gave me this book in the CBR book exchange in December 2016, two weeks before Carrie Fisher died. Even though I was beyond excited to finally have it in my possession, since it had been on my TBR for years and I’d never gotten around to it, I just couldn’t make myself read […]

Not Bad as a Background Soundtrack to Age of Empires II

February 12, 2018 by slowseptember Leave a Comment

I have a three-month-old son, and one of the ways we often spend our afternoons is with him napping and me playing on the computer. I can knock out a round of Age of Empires II in an hour, and I often put on an audiobook (usually of a book  I’ve read before, so I don’t have to pay much attention) and listen throughout my game  and for the rest of the afternoon when the little buddy wakes up.
