Industrial Society and Its Future

The Unabomber Manifesto is NOT an anarchist’s handbook nor a madman’s rant.

December 30, 2014 by AamilTheCamel Leave a Comment

Forty-fifth book reviewed as part of the 130 Challenge. All of 150 pages, but one hell of an essay! He falters in a lot of places where he loses control and rants madly, but when he is coherent, he is really very sharp. His observations are quite spot on and he does seem to have seen through the charade that is the modern civilization. I started reading this book just because I was curious about the mind of a serial murderer. Ted (aka The Unabomber) […]

Women’s Rights From an Academic Perspective

December 29, 2014 by Mrs Smith Reads Leave a Comment

I read From Outrage to Courage for an online course on International Women’s Health and Human Rights I took from Stanford University, which was led by the author, Anne Firth Murray. As a textbook, it was spot on in covering the main material of the course, as one would expect, but as a primer on women’s issues around the world, one could not ask for a better overview of the pressures, problems and political land mines that women face every day, around the world, from […]

File Under: Self Help, Business

December 28, 2014 by Mrs Smith Reads 2 Comments

Since my local library didn’t have Being Mortal yet, I picked up The Checklist Manifesto also by Atul Gawande, instead. It’s a short read, even shorter since I skimmed quite a few of the anecdotes regarding how to use checklists, but I did manage to pick up a few good tips for approaching projects and managing them more successfully. Gawande writes with an accessible style, which helps make what is essentially a one page outline worth pushing on through for 200+ pages. Gawande’s advice is straightforward […]

There’s a shortage of perfect movies in the world. . .

If you have the chance to see Cary Elwes talk about his book, go, it’s well worth braving the crowd.  If you don’t get the chance, be jealous of me, I won’t hold it against you. I’m amazed I didn’t faint.

Lego for Everyone!!!

December 18, 2014 by FyreHaar 2 Comments

Note: This review was written about the previous edition of the book.  The Amazon link is to the September 2014 edition. There are a lot of books on parenting out there. As a first time parent, I wanted to do the best job I could without getting caught up in the feeling of failing because I wasn’t doing it right according to Sears or Spock or whoever.  I read technical books on how often babies needed to eat and when I might need to call […]

The new king of the dads has risen.

December 15, 2014 by Robyn Robotron Leave a Comment

My daughter can’t even read and she loves this book.  She says it’s about mommies, which is amazingly on point, since I haven’t read any of it to her. I also feel I should point out that the color scheme is the same as my old Livejournal.
