The Italian police are just the worst.

March 6, 2015 by Mrs Smith Reads Leave a Comment

I picked up The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi several times at my local used book store and the library before I actually bought it. The cover, which depicts a Renaissance sculpture, suggests that the “True Story” takes place at that time. In reality, the Monster of Florence murders occurred between 1968 and 1985, and were never solved. The scandalous killings of 16 people, each involved couples, murdered at local trysting spots amongst the hillsides around the city of Florence. Both […]

Me Read Funny Essays One Day

March 1, 2015 by DataAngel Leave a Comment

I don’t know, guys. I just don’t know. I don’t get it. I mean, sure, David Sedaris is a writer who writes stuff and it’s kind of funny, but I don’t really “get” it. I’m supposed to be in the right demographic: I’m a cynical gen-Xer with a skewed outlook on life, but I really didn’t find these stories all that funny. They were interesting, but in an “I’m stuck at a dinner party with this guy dominating the conversation” way. I don’t know if […]

The Promise of Intimacy, Denied

February 24, 2015 by sistercoyote Leave a Comment

This isn’t the first time I’ve written a book review without finishing the book — but the last time was in the early 1980s when I read the first and then last chapters of Jane Eyre for English class. Plus one chapter in the middle I’d been assigned. The Great Mortality: An Intimate History of the Black Death, the most Devastating Plague of All Time is *exactly* the sort of book that should have been up my alley. It promises to be a look at […]

Hot Pockets 2: The Hot-Pocketing

February 23, 2015 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

There are few things Americans like to do more than eat. No one knows that better than comedian Jim Gaffigan. He has made a career celebrating and poking fun at our national obsession. In his new book, Food: A love Story, Gaffigan collects many of his stand up bits and expands on them, adds more, and delivers a consistently amusing, wry, and laugh out loud funny book. What I liked best about the book is that as much as Gaffigan professes his dislike for fruits […]

Also, you should Google ‘Do You Want to Date My Avatar?’

It’s hard to remember a time before The Guild, the little web show that could, brain-child of Felicia Day. Nowadays it’s taken as a given that Felicia was extremely influential in the flourishing and legitimizing of online content (certainly shows like The Lizzie Bennet Diaries would never have existed, and even Dr. Horrible’s Online Blog probably owes its existence to Day and The Guild (Joss Whedon is on record saying that The Guild gave him the idea to take his ideas to the internet). I […]

A really entertaining audio book

February 21, 2015 by Malin 4 Comments

Before I bought and listened to this audio book, which came to my attention thanks to fellow Cannonballer Narfna‘s enthusiastic review, this is what I knew about Craig Ferguson: 1. Until very recently, he hosted the Late, Late Show, where he always seemed to be genuinely interested in the guests in the few clips that I’ve seen. 2. He really likes Doctor Who 3. He used to be in a band with Peter Capaldi, who is currently playing Doctor Who. 4. He’s voiced a number […]
