A great book about two things I am terrible at: money and math. #CBRBingo – True Story

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis

October 8, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Smart people who think outside the box are so much fun to read about. I read this book really fast, and it was enjoyable to read the whole way through. I’ve never read a Michael Lewis book before, but I might consider reading more now. He has a simple, clean style that is really efficient at getting his story across, and he has an instinct for the best way to use his material. And he has some great underlying material here. As he notes in […]

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner

October 8, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This would have been much more impressive had I read it in a timely manner, like say ten years ago when I first wanted to. It does read a tad bit dated, even though this is the updated version, but it’s still pretty fascinating, and I think worth reading. I will be reading the second book and checking out the podcast. [four and a half months later] And now I have finally come to write this review, and I have forgotten nearly everything about it […]

Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.

She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey

October 7, 2019 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

You’ll read a lot of reviews about how this book is “gripping” and “thrilling” and “riveting,” and I’m not going to argue with any of it. For the first two-thirds of this book, I couldn’t put it down. I knew what was going to happen, but I really couldn’t stop reading. I looked forward to reading all day when I was at work. She Said is the story of how New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey investigated decades of rumors about producer […]

A Walk In The Woods by Bill Bryson

October 4, 2019 by Leedock Leave a Comment

CBR11 BINGO: Travel (BINGO! Pajiba square to Science square) This is one of those books that I heard about forever ago and passed by constantly on bookshelves. Novels with nature as a character are kind of my thing but non-fiction generally is not. Once again, Cannonball Read BINGO has pushed me to read something I most likely would have never gotten around to. (I’m just 3 squares from a black out, people. THREE and I will see it to fruition!) A quick Google search of “best travel books” landed […]

Terrible True Crime Book That Focuses on Everything but the Subject of the Book

The Wilderness of Ruin: A Tale of Madness, Fire, and the Hunt for America's Youngest Serial Killer by Roseanne Montillo

September 30, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Not too much to say except I echo the other readers who complained about this book being about everything except Jesse Pomeroy. Montillo seems to want to show her research into everything but him and we focus on the history of Boston, the Boston Great Fire, Herman freaking Melville, and honestly I think left a big question mark about whether Pomeroy was the person who murdered Katie Curran. “The Wilderness of Ruin” is a true crime book focusing on the United States youngest serial killer, […]

Cry Wolf

American Wolf: A True Story of Survival and Obsession in the West by Nate Blakeslee

September 27, 2019 by lumenatrix Leave a Comment

My cousin recommended this book to me and, oh man, am I glad she did. I swear, I don’t think I have ever cried so hard reading a non-fiction book before. This is an examination and history of the reintroduction of wolves into the Yellowstone Valley. It’s a very broad look at the entirety of the re-introduction project  started in 1995 following through until around 2014 or so, as well as getting really deep into the case studies of the various wolf packs, focusing predominantly […]
