Fear in the Borough

Brooklyn Noir by ed. Tim McLoughlin

August 30, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

This is the OG of the Akashic noir series, a series I greatly enjoy, being both a city lover and a fan of mystery/noir tales. I don’t always like short stories. I enjoy a book that I can really sink my teeth into, a plot that grips me, an argument to be made in non-fiction. These are usually my exception to the rule. I used to make fun of Brooklyn a lot. It’s become synonymous with gentrification, upper-middle and upper-class whites inhabiting working class neighborhoods, […]

That night Maite dreamed of drums in the jade-green jungle.

Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

August 11, 2021 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Velvet Was the Night would make an amazing movie or TV series. The book felt cinematic as I read. Moreno-Garcia paints pictures and moods so beautifully I could see them play out in my head. I don’t usually see books in my head. On top of that, Moreno-Garcia has created a Spotify playlist to listen to while reading. It is excellent. It’s June, 1971 in Mexico City. The Mexican Dirty War is just starting. President Echeverria is suppressing rock and roll. After a couple of […]

Spike as a wizard detective is the everything I needed in 2020.

Storm Front by (The Dresden Files #1)

December 30, 2020 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

Let me get this out of the way. For the life of me, I struggle to identify the difference between science fiction and fantasy. I think wizards/vampires lands us firmly in the fantasy camp, but I’m not certain. I feel better having confessed this. That out of the way, let me give a thanks to the CBR community. I was looking for a new audio book to sink into and went searching through posts on the CBR facebook page and found a post from someone […]

Suspense Is Killing

Hipster Death Rattle by Richie Narvaez

A Touch of Death by Charles Williams

September 25, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

I finished two different crime novels over the last couple of days, one written by a  novice, the other by a legend, both really good in their own respective ways. Hipster Death Rattle I’ve become more familiar with north Brooklyn the last couple of months and boy, does Richie Narvaez know ever corner and haunt. A delightful skewering of hipster culture set right in the middle of Williamsburg, Gentrification’s Ground Zero, the book is as much a satire as it is a mystery. Some of […]

This Time, It Stuck

City of Margins by William Boyle

May 12, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

This is the third William Boyle book I’ve tried. I still can’t get past the first 50 pages of Gravesend, as I found the characters to be uninteresting. The Lonely Witness was enjoyable enough but kind of a mess. Boyle, like George Pelecanos, writes character-driven crime tales that focus on their distinct urban neighborhoods. I always feel like I should enjoy both of their books more than I do. They always feel like I’m dropping in the middle episode of a well-produced television show that I’m unfamiliar with. […]

The Losers

The Alcoholics by Jim Thompson

Miami Purity by Vicki Hendricks

May 3, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

I knocked out two quickie noir tales yesterday, both about sad sacks trying to get through life. One I liked way more than the other. The Alcoholics Jim Thompson 2 stars The Year of Jim Thompson continues with one of his more forgettable works. The New York Review of Books described it as “satire with a bludgeon” and I suppose that’s true because I felt bludgeoned by this one. If you like your satire this heavy handed, this one may work. But it didn’t for me. […]
