Binti So something that I really liked about this novella is that there is almost no world building. This will come up in another review I will be writing later too. Too often, a new inventive world is described in a too detailed way where simply telling the story and setting up what we need to know as we go will be much much better, and there’s a more satisfying story that way. And so this one does. The only real issue I have with […]
It Deserves a Better Description than “Nigerian Harry Potter”
When I saw Akata Witch in Overdrive, it was dubbed the “Nigerian Harry Potter“. I had always been a fan of the Harry Potter movies, but didn’t care enough about the writing in the actual books. So I never truly appreciated what this could really mean to a fan of the series. But I knew enough about it to be intrigued and gave it a try. The book is very similar to Harry Potter in a couple of ways. The main character is Sunny, an albino African-American who is bright […]
Tentacles Everywhere
Binti has been on my TBR pile for a long time, so when someone suggested it for the Vaginal Fantasy give-Veronica-some-suggestions-for-January vote, it voted for it and was really pleased when Veronica picked it for the January book I was pleased. I will note, it’s a bit off brand for Vaginal Fantasy as it doesn’t contain a romance at all, but I’m ok with that. I’m… not really sure how I feel about it. It was fine, but it didn’t really draw me in. One […]
A great Afro-futuristic novel, still good on the re-read
The first time I read Who Fears Death, I was grabbed by it. I was so compelled by Onyesonwu, our protagonist, that I didn’t have a critical eye for anything else. And that’s the beauty and frustration of a re-read. You see good things you didn’t see before, but your blinders also come off and you see other things that you missed on the first go. Sometimes, that means a formerly five-star book comes down a bit, and that’s the case with this one. I […]
An okay prequel.
I’m embarking on a new research project, and I’ve followed several ideas up by reading books that I think will fit this budding thesis. I had read Nnedi Okorafor’s Who Fears Death two years ago for CBR7, and I didn’t know until recent that she had published a prequel of sorts. I wasn’t sure if either of these books would fit my project so a read/reread was in order. I do very much like Okorafor’s concentration on Afrofuturism, about which I know relatively little. I’ll […]
She’s leaving home…
I haven’t read a lot of science-fiction, I was never interested in it when I was a kid even though my dad tried to get me into it. But I also don’t decide what to read based on genre. If something sounds appealing I will read it, I don’t care what genre it is supposed to be. As for this novella, I don’t even remember how I found it but the summary sounded amazing so I decided to buy it. And I don’t regret buying […]
