The Maid: this book was not good

The Maid by Nita Prose

January 12, 2024 by donttrustthe_bea 2 Comments

mood music: you’re no good – Linda Ronstadt This book contains an offensive depiction of a person who has autism. To be clear, it is never expressly stated that the protagonist, Molly, has autism. She only refers to herself as “different,” and having trouble reading faces and social cues. While I am not neurodivergent, my partner is, and when I read him some excerpts from the book, he found them problematic. Molly Gray is a twenty-something-year-old maid who works at a luxurious hotel in an […]

Don’t Assume

The Maid: A Novel by Nita Prose

May 21, 2023 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Those who enjoyed ‘Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’ In a nutshell: Molly is a maid at a fancy hotel, who discovers the dead body of a prominent hotel guest. Worth quoting: “Everything will be okay in the end. And if it’s not okay, it’s not the end.” Why I chose it: I think it had a lot of buzz around it last year so wanted to check it out. What it left me feeling: Maternal (for the main character); frustrated. Review: It’s been […]

Motivation to clean out my TBR

The Maid by Nita Prose

May 29, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

I love stories with neuro-atypical protagonists, and I enjoy a good buddy caper. I enjoy mysteries of all kinds, I don’t mind when things get dark and creepy (think, Silvia Moreno Garcia, or Tana French). But I also enjoy something more like Only Murders in the Building – a very real murder to solve, but somehow conveying a light-hearted tone. Cozy mysteries can be lovely – but they can also veer into some tricky territory, because somehow the author has to make us care about […]

In this life, you just never know what’s around the bend, be it a dead man or your next date.

The Maid by Nita Prose

A lot of folks raved about this book. Not trying to sound all contrary, but I do not understand what the appeal is here. I am vexed. The plot is pretty easily summarized. Molly, a neuroatypical woman, was abandoned by her mother who suffered from drug addiction. She is raised by her grandmother and follows in her footsteps, when she graduates from high school, and becomes a maid. Extremely disciplined and focused on cleanliness, Molly is perfectly cut out for her occupation at a high […]

“As for order, it is my express wish to live as ordered a life as possible. But the world is filled with random chaos that often devils my attempts at arrangement.”

The Maid by Nita Prose

I was really worried I wouldn’t like this, and I so wanted to like this. I heard the premise (maid finds dead body in hotel room, becomes suspect, decides to solve crime), pointed my finger, and loudly ejaculated, “THAT BOOK IS FOR ME.” Sorry I used ‘ejaculated,’ I just never have before (I don’t think?) and it was calling to me. I’ve been reading too much historical fiction set in 19th century England lately. People were always ejaculating back then*. *I could not type this with […]

Protect Molly at all costs

The Maid by Nita Prose

I don’t often take recommendations; generally, I prefer to find my books more organically, especially since my tastes are a bit all over the place, even more than with other types of media. You might think me weird, finicky, or downright contrarian, but it’s not like I try to be. I just know what I like when I actually see it; I give most potential books a first sentence/paragraph/page test, seeing if they grab my attention right out of the gates, because they probably […]
