“It’s still true”

Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt

April 11, 2021 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

In the early pandemic times, when I had that “new pandemic energy,” I started reading the first books of The Babysitter’s Club series on Facebook live, adding in my own color commentary. It was a hit, I mean TENS of people tuned in (heh). Like a lot of new quirky pandemic hobbies (I’m looking at you, sourdough starter) it soon lost it’s luster and I only made it like 2 and a half books in, and I stowed the books on my book shelf in […]

It is impossible. But it is not ridiculous.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a 2010 Newbery Honor Book, meaning it was nominated for the award but lost to When You Reach Me. It fills the Snubbed slot on my bingo card for that reason. You would think that I would’ve heard of this book. It’s: A Newbery Honor Book A Coretta Scott King Honor Book A Printz Honor Book Longlisted for the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature Winner of the Walter Dean Myers Award Parents’ Choice Gold Award Winner An Entertainment Weekly Best YA Book of 2017 A Vulture Best YA Book of 2017 IIIA Buzzfeed Best YA Book of 2017 But I hadn’t heard of it, or thought about it. And maybe that’s the problem the book is getting at. Jason Reynolds’ Long Way […]

I Didn’t Mean to Read This Whole Book

January 6, 2018 by Becky with the good flare 2 Comments

As many people are aware, 2017 was on the whole, a bit nuts. My personal and professional life decided to follow suit, and while I may appreciate the travel miles and hotel points that racked up, I’m looking forward to a more stable (personally) 2018. I started at new job with the new along with the new year, and while I’m searching for housing in a new area, I’ve been staying with family during the work week. Wednesday night, I sat down to read aloud […]
