It Just Wasn’t Enough

Too Much is Not Enough by Andrew Rannells

March 15, 2021 by chelz.hawk Leave a Comment

Andrew Rannells’ memoir walks you through his young life starting out in the Omaha theater scene, up through his move to New York for college, his subsequent drop out and struggle with finding himself and his place in show business and all of the lessons he learned along the way. It stops just short of his rise as a Broadway star in his most known role of Elder Price in Book of Mormon. You go through a few heartbreaks, and then you realize that maybe […]

What to do when your life’s philosophy fails you?

The Index of Self-Destructive Acts by Christopher R. Beha

February 18, 2021 by msvreadsbooks Leave a Comment

This was a terrific book! It follows 7 people who are all kind of loosely connected through less than a year in New York. Each of the characters is so interesting, and they all make decisions in a very particular way. It seems like they make decisions based on their own internal logic which they think is kind of flawless, and then they’re all coming to terms with the fact that their belief systems are flawed and their heroes aren’t who they though they were. […]

The True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey

The Dame by Richard Stark

Tricky by Josh Stallings

Quarry's Deal by Max Alan Collins

The Plea by Steve Cavanagh

February 1, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

I read a lot last week but also had a busy week at work (a good busy). Every time I tried to write a review on one of these books, all of them good, I just didn’t have the time or energy. So here’s a big update dump of the stuff I read in the last week and I’d be glad to tease them out more in the comments if anyone is curious… “The True History of the Kelly Gang” I enjoyed large parts of […]

Lawyer Stuff

The Defense by Steve Cavanagh

January 25, 2021 by Jake 1 Comment

I saw this laughable image/tweet in the time I was reading the book and since it’s close to the plot summary, I figured I’d bless y’all with it. There’s a certain condescension amongst book readers as to how seriously they should take page-turning novels. I often hear the phrase “Turn off your brain for this one!” While there may be some truth to it, most fiction requires elaborations and expansions of the truth. You could read something like The Defense and grouse about how something like that […]

Santa is a Swindler

The Santa Claus Man by Alex Palmer

January 13, 2021 by chelz.hawk Leave a Comment

“At such a thrilling time in New York City, it did not seem ridiculous to trust the Santa Claus Man, but rather, ridiculous to doubt him.” In 1913, a man named John Duval Gluck Jr. requested that the General Post Office of New York City direct all letters to Santa to his small office in the back of a local chop house. For the past two years, the Post Office had been looking for an organization to properly handle these letters, saddened by the idea […]

These fierce Honey Badger sisters are not meant to be underestimated

Hot and Badgered (Honey Badger Chronicles #1) by Shelly Laurenston

In a Badger Way (Honey Badger Chronicles #2) by Shelly Laurenston

December 26, 2020 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

Since I enjoyed Shelly Laurenston’s Call of Crows series, I started her new trilogy focused on shifters rather than Viking warriors. We got a very small peek of the shifter world in the Crow books, so I was intrigued. The Honey Badger Chronicles follows the misadventures of three sisters who can’t seem to stay out of trouble. I fell in love with these feisty shifter women almost instantly. I thought the Crow warrior women were intense and uncouth, but these fierce sisters are fearless AF […]
