Rocking your love

Love and the Rocking Chair by Diane Dillon

December 12, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

According to the jacket, Love and the Rocking Chair was the last collaboration of husband and wife team Leo and Diane Dillon. I am not exactly sure how that happened, as Leo Dillon passed in 2012, but I am sure it is true. After all, the signature style of both is plainly there. While the story is simple and we have seen parts of it before, the illustrations are pure gold. They outdid themselves again! The story is a young couple who got married, soon […]

The Stuff of Stars by Marion Dane Baue

April 17, 2019 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

The Stuff of Stars is what I would call “a real WOW!” book. Marion Dane Bauer has created text that is poetic and traditional text simultaneously. Along with the illustrations of Ekua Holmes, Bauer’s text is extremely strong. A read-aloud time will be most joyous as you will be able to “James Earl Jones” it (i.e.: just have a booming good time saying the words). While The Stuff of Stars is about a scientific theory, there is a hint of spiritually as well. Both story […]

Little Owl’s Egg by Debi Glori

February 20, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Little Owl’s Egg is a different take on having a new sibling. Usually they talk about how great the baby is going to be, and/or the older sibling is usually excited about the new addition. This time, Little Owl is less than thrilled (giant, multiple Nos! clue you into this fact). To sooth a hurt Little Owl (after all Mama does not need a new Little Owl, she has them), Mama plays a game about what kind of baby she will be having. This is […]

Classical and modern take on love and children in a new picture book

September 5, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Love You More is about a couple of parents telling their child how much they love them and what they have learned from loving their child. The parents thought they knew true love with each other, but their child has taken them to another level of love. In Love You More we see the child grow as the parents take a modern take about love and how the family now centers around the love for the child. Gary Urda has taken from his own experiences […]
