Never Have You Held Back Your Heart

A Touch of Stone and Snow by Milla Vane

June 21, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I dove into A Touch of Stone and Snow as soon as I finished A Heart of Blood and Ashes. Lizzan and Aerax grew up together on Koth and were sweathearts until Lizzan was exiled in shame for telling the truth about how the soldiers she led were killed. They meet up again years later. The goddess Vela tasks Lizzan with protecting Aerax and promises to reward her with a glorious death in battle. Lizzan does not tell Aerax the truth about her quest or her reward. Aerax […]

“You’ve already made tea? Is this what I get for successfully fondling you?”

Two Rogues Make a Right (Seducing the Sedgewicks 3) by Cat Sebastian

June 16, 2020 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Every time I read Cat Sebastian, I wonder why it is I haven’t devoured her entire back catalog? She’s a brilliant writer. Her stories make me feel like I’ve been snuggled on the world’s most comfortable couch. Two Rogues Make a Right is the third book in a series. You can read it as a stand alone. In the previous book, A Gentleman Never Keeps Score, Martin Easterbrook is an antagonist to Will Sedgwick’s brother. However, I didn’t remember much about that part of the plot (much […]

The Potato, The People, and The State

Feeding the People: The Politics of the Potato by Rebecca Earle

June 10, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I like potatoes. I like history. A book tracing the history of the potato, it’s global spread and it’s use in statecraft is right up my ally. Rebecca Earle’s Feeding the People: The Politics of the Potato is a dense and interesting read. I received an advance reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I would love love love to see this adapted into a documentary series. The book is packed with ideas and it travels the globe. From the spine of […]

The Wrong Mr. Darcy by Evelyn Lozada, Holly Lörincz

June 8, 2020 by J 2 Comments

I am weak for a Pride & Prejudice retelling. My best friend pointed out that I never enjoy them, despite the fact that I will read almost any that come my way. One of the reasons I so often don’t enjoy them is because I don’t know what I want in a retelling. When do I begrudge the changes made to put the story in a new context? What elements are necessary to retain the spirit of the story I love? Do I need to […]

Meet My New Life Partner – This Chocolate Cake

InstantPot Miracle Vegetarian Cookbook: More Than 100 Easy Meatless Meals for Your Favorite Kitchen Device by Urvashi Pitre

May 31, 2020 by Emmalita 8 Comments

I love my InstantPot. I was a vegetarian for over 20 years. I have heard great things about Urvashi Pitre, but have never really looked at her recipes. When I saw InstantPot Miracle Vegetarian Cookbook: More Than 100 Easy Meatless Meals for Your Favorite Kitchen Device available for request on NetGalley, it seemed like a good ask.  I received an arc in exchange for an honest review. Shortly before I received the arc, I cleaned out the pantry and discovered that we somehow have 4 mostly […]

I Don’t Not Like You

The Trouble With Hating You by Sajni Patel

May 14, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I recommend Sajni Patel’s debut, The Trouble With Hating You, with some caution. Not everyone is going to like Liya, the prickly main character, and I cannot speak to the quality of the Desi representation. It’s high drama and angst with low heat. I enjoyed enough about the book that I would be interested in reading more from the author. I received this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The drama in the book may also put some people off. Most significantly, there […]
