A Graphic Graphic Novel that Could Have Been More Interestingly Graphic

Cheat(er) Code by S.A. Foxe, Daz

September 28, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I don’t remember exactly how Cheat(er) Code came to my attention, but when I saw that it was advertised as an “erotic graphic novel,” I was intrigued and ran to NetGalley to request a copy for review. I did receive an arc in exchange for an honest review. My ultimate feeling about Cheater Code is that it’s fine. The book opens with two men in an apartment kitchen getting naked and talking about why they never make it to the bedroom. In walks our main character, […]

I Expect I’ll Turn the World Upside Down

The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk

September 15, 2020 by Emmalita 5 Comments

The Midnight Bargain is a wonderful stand alone fantasy novel. C.L. Polk has created a world that feels very mid-18th century – not quite on the verge of an industrial revolution, but moving in that direction. The society is stratified by wealth and a good way to earn wealth is through magic and the magical societies open only to men. Women are prohibited from the magical education which would allow them to practice higher levels of magic. Beatrice Clayborn is the eldest daughter of a […]

Mexico in my Kitchen in a Book

The Mexican Home Kitchen by Mely Martinez

September 13, 2020 by Emmalita 3 Comments

Based on her years writing her blog, Mexico in My Kitchen, Mely Martinez has brought us The Mexican Home Kitchen. It’s a beautiful book with a nice variety of recipes. I received this as an arc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I grew up in Central Texas with Tex-Mex as my home food. Tex-Mex is an anglicized variant of northern Mexican home cooking. It doesn’t take much effort to find more traditional Mexican fare in and around Austin, but it was our […]

I’m just suggesting a super casual outing where we do some low-key ogling

Common Goal (Game Changers 4) by Rachel Reid

September 5, 2020 by Emmalita 4 Comments

Common Goal was very readable, but perhaps suffered from having been read after a string of excellent books. While I read it quickly and enjoyed it while I read it, it hasn’t stayed with me. It also suffers a bit in comparison to Reid’s Heated Rivalry, a book that captured magic. Eric and Kyle’s story is much gentler, and there is nothing wrong with that. It’s a 3.5 star read. Eric is recently divorced, getting ready for the end of his hockey career and thinking […]

They were way too immature to turn down a shot at those bragging rights

Tools of Engagement by Tessa Bailey

September 5, 2020 by Emmalita 4 Comments

When I requested Tools of Engagement on NetGalley I didn’t realize it was a third book in a series. I received the arc early enough that I felt like I could read the first two books and get this one read and reviewed before publication. The problem was, I hated the first book so much I dnf’d it at 40%. That made me reluctant to read the next book and eventually, I just had to skip it and read this one. I liked it much more […]

It was triumph. More than that, it was bravery. Sheer courage.

Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade

September 1, 2020 by Emmalita 6 Comments

Dammmmmmnnnnnnn! Olivia Dade keeps getting better and better. She doesn’t need to, she was already pretty close to perfect, but she keeps doing it anyway. I received and advance reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. April Whittier is a geologist who in her down time writes fanfic under the name UltimateLaviniaStan. Her fandom of choice is an incomplete book series retelling of the Aeneid, which has been adapted into a tv show (like Game of Thrones). April has kept her real […]
