After the Hero’s Quest Ends

So This Is Ever After by FT Lukens

April 12, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

After defeating the Vile One as the prophecy foretold, Arek has somehow ended up as king – and now he must find someone to wed if he is to survive his eighteenth birthday. And his first choice, his best friend and mage Matt, obviously doesn’t like him back. I was very excited by the idea of this book – the Chosen One having to settle down after fulfilling his prophecy and now actually getting on with the business of governing his newfound kingdom. However, though […]

Violent Delights

Truly, Madly: Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, and the Romance of the Century by Stephen Galloway

April 12, 2022 by Pooja 7 Comments

Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier were an iconic couple in the acting industry, with their combined talent and looks. But the turbulent thread of mental illness ran through their intense romance, ultimately tearing them apart. I only vaguely know both these figures, Leigh better than Olivier because of Gone With the Wind. However, I have always been fascinated by old Hollywood romances because of how turbulent they are, and I was excited for this one. The author has a pleasant narrative voice – he is respectful of […]

The Crow God Reborn remakes us all

Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse

April 9, 2022 by Emmalita 9 Comments

The tl:dr version of this review is: I could not put it down. It was so, so good. Very much a middle book, but a very entertaining middle book. Fevered Star starts with a murder. Far from the chaos in Tova, Lord Balam murders a thief so that he can walk through dreams.  Serapio wakes up with a wound he cannot heal and uncertain of who he is now, having expected to die at the Convergence. Naranpa wakes up in a tomb, back from the […]

Family Feud: Medieval Scotland

The Highlander's Stolen Bride by Madeline Martin

April 8, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Elspeth is on her way to wed a childhood friend when she is abducted by Calum Campbell, who hopes to use her as a bargaining chip to gain an audience with her brother. But when they begin to fall in love, they must figure out how to end the war between their clans if they hope to be together. Though it was slow going at first, I soon got sucked into this story of warring clans and unlikely romance. Calum’s gentle nature provides an interesting […]

I dream of standing under an enormous tree with deep, gnarled roots

Tanked by Mia Hopkins

April 7, 2022 by Emmalita 1 Comment

Tanked is gorgeous. I had high expectations after I devoured the first two books in the series in 2 days, and I was still unprepared for Tanked. It is full of longing. The sex is plentiful, hot, and evolves as Angel and Deanna’s relationship evolves. The attention to detail is excellent. There are little hummingbird silhouettes in the breaks, and yes, they are meaningful. The third book in Mia Hopkins’ Eastside Brewery series, is set smack in the pandemic. The loneliness, isolation, and economic hardship are […]

If it was possible to make resentful coffee, that’s what I did.

Book Boyfriend by Kris Ripper

April 6, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Kris Ripper takes on the grand gesture and the grovel in Book Boyfriend. Preston has been in love with his friend and former college roommate, Art, for years. They shared a drunken kiss in college and then Art indicated they never wanted to speak of it again. When Art shows up sobbing in the lobby of Preston’s apartment building, having just broken up with their awful boyfriend, Preston invites Art to take his spare room. He sees an opportunity to show Art that he would […]
