Vinh not being sure of something was kind of like concrete turning into Jell-O.

Ex Appeal by Cathy Yardley

October 28, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Ex Appeal is the much anticipated (by me) third instalment of the Ponto Beach Reunion series.  In the first two books, Love, Comment, Subscribe and Gouda Friends, we’ve seen Vinh Doan and Emily MacDonald in the background. They were high school sweethearts who went off to college together and then Vinh broke up with Emily when she needed him most. If you are a longtime romance reader, you know they are definitely getting back together. It’s a classic set-up. In the years since their break-up, […]

I loved this book, and then I found the recipes at the end and now I LOVE this book.

Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan

October 27, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

This is a ridiculously silly thing to be excited about, but there are recipes at the end of this book! We get to read about all this great food and then, we can make it ourselves. I loved this book and it made me cry and laugh and ache, but then I got to the end, and those recipes are like my own personal happily ever after. This is one of the best depictions of food as love and healing that I’ve read. Before I […]

Diasporican: A Puerto Rican Cookbook by Illyanna Maisonet

October 18, 2022 by Emmalita 2 Comments

I will read anything Illyanna Maisonet wants to write. She is like a breath of salt-tinged fresh air in a stuffy room. Reading Diasporican: A Puerto Rican Cookbook is a no-brainer for me. I want her to have the resources to write whatever she wants to write. On almost every page of Diasporican I found myself muttering, “I love her.” This is one of the most quotable cookbooks I’ve read. I cannot share as many quotes as I’d like because I’m working from an advance reader […]

Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey

October 8, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto is a great follow up read to The 1619 Project. I started following Tricia Hersey’s The Nap Ministry in 2017 on Twitter and later on Instagram. I hope this book is read widely and deeply because it could be life saving. It’s the kind of book that people put on their TBR because it seems like an important book, and then they never read it, or read it years later, or pretend they read it. But really, just read it […]

We were in the most romantic of unromantic places. It was perfect.

The Christmas Clash by Suzanne Park

October 4, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Christmas Clash was an engaging YA romance. Less Christmas and less clash, more teens figuring out how to grow up and be their own people. The tagline ‘Tis the Season to be Enemies is cute, but not actually reflective of the book, for which I am grateful. Chlow Kwon and Peter Li have always known each other, sort of. Their parents have competing restaurants across the mall food court from each other. The Kwons and the Lis have hated each other for years, and Chloe […]

“Hidey ho, neighbor.” And he crossed the three feet that had been between them and slid his hands around her waist.

Chick Magnet by Emma Barry

October 4, 2022 by Emmalita 2 Comments

My heart. Emma Barry is so good. At its core, Chick Magnet is hurt/comfort. Nic and Will each start the book in a bad place and though they are in no condition to start a new relationship, they offer each other comfort and understanding. The deep emotion and drama of hurt/comfort is well balanced by the joy of chickens, kittens, friendships, and a variety of banters that range from funny to steamy. Nic has moved to Yagerstown, Virginia with her flock of chickens after being […]
