Ollie and Darling vs Fay and Oliver

Playing House by Ruby Lang

May 19, 2019 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Ruby Lang is one of my favorite new (to me) authors. I have been waiting impatiently for her new book, Playing House, and was delighted to find that it was on NetGalley. I was even more delighted when it showed up in my in box. This is an honest review. Oliver Huang and Fay Liu have known each other for years, their friends know each other, and they are in the same profession – urban planning. Their acquaintance never turned romantic because Fay was in […]

“There’s Hope Left in These Dusty Chords”

Raze by Roan Parrish

May 14, 2019 by Emmalita 1 Comment

Raze is the third book in Roan Parrish’s Riven series. I have not read the first two, but when I saw Raze offered on NetGalley I remembered ctkat1’s very positive review and decided to request it anyway. I’m glad I did. Raze is out July 2. This was in many ways a sweet book to read. There are times when I need a heavy dose of emotional angst in my falling in love story. Raze had some good angst. Felix and Huey are both messes who […]

This book should have stayed out of print

Dearly Beloved by Mary Jo Putney

May 14, 2019 by Emmalita 7 Comments

Someone decided it would be a good idea to re-release Mary Jo Putney’s debut novel, Dearly Beloved. They were wrong. It was not a good idea. This book should be put in the archives and only brought out as a bad example. I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This review is dark and full of spoilers. Content warning – rape, sexual  assault, internalized misogyny, verbal and emotional abuse Here is the plot, with spoilers. Gervase Brandelin, Viscount St. Aubyn […]

Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

May 14, 2019 by J 4 Comments

This was a really fun read! It reminded me a lot of The Royal We, though it’s definitely not an imitation of that work. Alex Claremont-Diaz is a college senior, the son of the President of the United States and a US senator. For years, the younger prince of Great Britain, Henry Wales, has been his nemesis. The prince is too controlled, too perfect. He’s a stiff where Alex loves getting his hands dirty and treats politics like an intramural sport. Alex causes an international […]

A Sweet Slow Burn

Teach Me by Olivia Dade

May 9, 2019 by Emmalita 1 Comment

I received this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I haven’t read Olivia Dade before. I thought she was one of the authors I follow on Twitter, but she was not. She is now, though. Teach Me was a lovely read with +40 characters who behaved like they had lived lives, and actual positive fat representation. It’s out May 30th. Rose and Martin are teachers at the same high school, both teaching history classes. They are equals in their credentials, but Martin has just […]

I do not want to read this book

Somebody to Love by Aurelia Fray

May 7, 2019 by Emmalita 3 Comments

This is my first DNF for the year and I have put this author on my not at any price list. The cover is cute, so I requested it from Netgalley. This is an honest review. I wish I had paid more attention to the description, it might have saved me some heartache. Henry only needed to fix the leaky office pipes. So, when a crazy woman barges in and turns his day upside down, then confesses all her secrets like a challenge, he faces […]
